Barcelona Transfer News: Marc-Andre Ter Stegen Comments Amid Liverpool Rumours

Matt JonesMar 30, 2016

Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen has reiterated his long-term future is uncertain at the Camp Nou amid stories linking the player with a move to Liverpool.

Ter Stegen plays in the cup competitions for Barcelona, with Claudio Bravo in between the sticks for La Liga matches, and according to Lluis Miguelsanz of Sport, it’s a situation the former Borussia Monchengladbach man is getting tired of, with Liverpool and Manchester City said to be keen on signing him.

The 23-year-old, speaking after a fine display for Germany in a 4-1 friendly win over Italy, has done little to quell the festering speculation, per Adam Smith of the MailOnline:

"

I don't know what the coach [Luis Enrique] thinks, you have to ask him. I can just say that I want to give my very best.

That's what I always do—I want to give my best for the team and obviously also for me.

I hope we reach the next round in the [UEFA] Champions League and win our next game in the league—these are my goals with the team. Obviously I also have personal goals.

The coach decides the way he decides, I guess he has his reasons to do so. But we will see how this goes on in the future.

"

Previously, the 'keeper has also said "if the situation remains the way it is at the moment [at Barcelona] then we're definitely going to have to talk—there's no avoiding that," per Press Association Sport (h/t Sky Sports).

When Ter Stegen signed for Barcelona, it was anticipated he would go on to become the club’s first-team goalkeeper pretty quickly. Here is a look at why:

But after only being involved in the cup competitions during his debut campaign, the same pattern has run into this season. And despite his tender years, especially for a goalkeeper, it seems as though the Germany international is beginning to get a little fed up of playing second fiddle to Bravo.

At Anfield, he definitely wouldn’t be playing a supplementary role. Manager Jurgen Klopp would love to have a goalkeeper as composed and dynamic at the base of his side, not to mention an influence the club could rely on for many more years to come.

The IndigoLFC Twitter feed rates Ter Stegen and thinks he should be high up on the club’s list of priorities this summer:

What should prompt Liverpool into testing Barcelona’s will to keep hold of their goalkeeper is the current form of their own stopper. That’s because the jury remains very much out on Simon Mignolet despite being handed a new five-year deal earlier in the season.

The Belgian, in fairness, is capable of pulling off wonderful saves at times, and in some matches this term, he’s kept Liverpool in contention when they’ve been clinging on. But so often he undoes all that good work with a rudimentary mistake.

These two posts from Squawka Football, on the same day, sum up the former Sunderland man’s time at Anfield:

The Reds need a steadier presence in goal, and while there are still some rough edges to Ter Stegen’s play, he’d be a major upgrade on Mignolet. Not only is he a wonderful shot stopper, but he’s sharp off his line, commanding in taking crosses and brilliant at distributing from deep, something that has been a major asset to Barcelona in the Champions League.

Ter Stegen is so prodigious and so talented that it’d be a big surprise if Barcelona were to let him go this summer. For manager Luis Enrique, having two brilliant goalkeepers sharing duties at the moment is an ideal situation, but the club will be acutely aware that the German is the future and will surely give him the minutes he craves next season.
