WWE Raw: Burning Questions to Address After March 21 Show

Erik BeastonMar 22, 2016

As the worst build to a WrestleMania event since No. 13 in 1997 limps along, WWE once again finds itself with more burning questions to address than answered following an episode of Raw.

A miserable episode of Raw, plagued with lackadaisical booking and uninteresting angles, this week's broadcast did little to intensify interest in The Showcase of the Immortals or any of its marquee matches set for April 3. That should be the main priority of WWE Creative, but on Monday night, it failed miserably.

At this point, fans are not even sure exactly what match they should invest in as the true and undisputed main event of the show, and a lot of that has to do with the indecision of the company. Will it be the WWE World Heavyweight Championship match between Roman Reigns and Triple H or Shane McMahon vs. Undertaker inside Hell in a Cell?

And where does Dean Ambrose vs. Brock Lesnar fit into the equation?

Then there was the construction of a huge ladder match for the WWE Intercontinental Championship that seemingly came from out of nowhere.

Finally, there is The Wyatt Family and their confusing, dumbfounding use.

Those three topics are burned in the minds of fans as the premiere event in wrestling approaches in just under two weeks.

1. What is the Real Main Event of WrestleMania 32?

Promotional materials, including the giant event poster hung on the wall of The Authority's office Monday night, suggest that Roman Reigns vs. Triple H for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship will be the main event of WrestleMania.

Lately, though, two other matches have stolen the headlines and appear to be much more suited for that spot on the card than the world title bout guaranteed to endure angry jeers from frustrated fans.

The first is Brock Lesnar vs. Dean Ambrose. Considering how much television time has been awarded to Ambrose of late, and the fact that he headlined Monday's Raw from Philadelphia against Braun Strowman, it would seem as if WWE Creative recognizes the immense wave of support that The Lunatic Fringe is enjoying right now and would rather put a molten-hot babyface in the top spot on the show than a lukewarm star in Reigns.

Then there is Shane McMahon vs. Undertaker inside Hell in a Cell, which was referred to countless times, across three different video packages as the main event.

So what is the real headliner for this year's show?

Some would argue that there is nothing wrong with having three perceived main events, but it is a sign of indecision within WWE Creative. It is a sign of the company realizing that Plan A has failed miserably and that it is not quite sure whether it wants to roll with it anyway or replace it at the top of the card with a hotter match.

It is hardly the position the company hoped to find itself in at this point, with so few days to decide.

2. Since When Were Sin Cara, Zack Ryder and Stardust Contenders to the Intercontinental Championship?

Monday's episode of Raw brought with it the announcement of a seven-man Ladder match for the Intercontinental Championship. The bout will feature Kevin Owens defending against Sami Zayn, Dolph Ziggler and The Miz. That part of the equation at least makes sense. All three of those men have been embroiled in a program with Kevin Owens in some form or fashion.

What made zero sense was the sudden inclusion of Stardust, Zack Ryder and Sin Cara. Yes, all three Superstars have worked incredibly hard over the last year, be it on live events, episodes of Superstars and Main Event, or in the opportunities they have had to shine on Raw and SmackDown.

But they've had zero interaction with Owens in recent weeks and have not done anything to earn a shot at the title from a storyline standpoint. It makes no sense for them to magically be granted a championship opportunity, nor did it fit the character of Owens to become a whiny heel type who ran to Stephanie McMahon to fix things for him when they did not go his way.

The rush to book the match, the nonsensical involvement of Ryder, Sin Cara and Stardust, and the sudden ladder stipulation reeked of Creative looking for a reason to get more guys on the card while simultaneously attempting to generate interest in one of WWE's midcard title bouts via another gimmick match.

In the end, it was another example of the substandard booking that has gone into this year's spectacular.

3. What is the Purpose of The Wyatt Family at This Point?

There is no act in WWE right now that is more disappointing than The Wyatt Family. The faction started with such promise, was built so well over time, and then descended so quickly into mediocrity and disjointed booking that one has to wonder how any fan can be expected to buy into their act when management's love of it fluctuates seemingly based on the time and day.

It is disappointing to see a performer in Bray Wyatt, who believes in his character, be wasted on rambling promos and meaningless matches that he is guaranteed to lose. He speaks a mean game but never wins, and his massive followers are treated as if they are glorified jobbers.

That is, except Braun Strowman, who may be the worst wrestler on the main roster but has been protected by booking thus far in his main roster run. Case in point: the conclusion to Raw, which saw Strowman spared of a loss via disqualification during his match with Dean Ambrose in the main event.

At some point, WWE Creative either needs to get fully behind the faction and let the four Superstars go on a string of high-profile victories or abandon them altogether, leaving them to compete in the midcard alongside Dolph Ziggler, The Miz, Neville and every other promising young star who has been relegated to 50-50 booking and robbed of quality and sustained pushes.

Otherwise, writers will continue shoving the act down the throats of fans who will never believe in them because they have not been given a reason to by management.
