Injuries Continue to Surface for Kompany
Kompany makes such a huge difference to City when he’s in the team. Not only is he a forceful, intelligent and technical defensive presence at the back, but he’s a wonderful communicator and a captain who leads by example.
Without him, the Etihad Stadium outfit has a tendency to look rudderless at the back, with none of the other available defensive options capable of blending the aforementioned traits.
Nicolas Otamendi is clearly a talented player, but he's a centre-back who is still getting to grips with the English game. Elsewhere in the squad, significant question marks are hanging over the erratic Eliaquim Mangala and the 35-year-old Martin Demichelis.
Although City are set to march into a new era with a new manager, Pep Guardiola, having someone with Kompany’s qualities remaining at the core of the side is vital.
Sadly, while he’s a player who makes such a huge impact when he’s on the field, City players and fans alike have had to grow used to his not being around. In 2015-16, a succession of problems has derailed the Belgian’s season and handed the team’s chances of major honours a significant blow.
As popular as he is at the club, should these injury woes persist, City may have to start building toward the future with a new figurehead on the field.
