Canelo Alvarez vs. Amir Khan: Danny Garcia Breaks Down World-Title Fight
Danny Garcia says Amir Khan has all the attributes to beat Saul "Canelo" Alvarez, insisting the English boxer has a good chance of springing a surprise by taking the Mexican's WBC middleweight title on May 7.
The WBC welterweight champion—who beat Khan at light-welterweight in 2012—praised the 29-year-old for having the most talent of the pair, but he does think Alvarez's power could be crucial, per FightHype.com (via Sky Sports' Tim Hobbs):
"I think Khan has the perfect style to beat Canelo.
If you're talking talent, I think Khan is definitely more talented than Canelo.
The only thing is, can he sustain Canelo's attack and power? Can he survive in the later rounds? But I think Khan is going to start good in the fight.
If he has a strong finish, if he finishes strong, he has a chance to win the fight. He has to be able to take a big punch.
But as far as style, I think he's got a good style to beat Canelo. But we don't know if he's physically strong enough.
"
American Garcia is in the minority in giving Khan much of a chance to beat Alvarez, not least because the Bolton, England, fighter is taking a big step up from his usual welterweight (147 pounds) to the 155-pound catchweight at which the Las Vegas clash will be fought.
Many were surprised when the fight was made as the size difference between the two is likely to be huge when they step into the ring, especially given Canelo's history of rehydrating considerably, per former world cruiserweight champion Enzo Maccarinelli:
Two-time world champion Paulie Malignaggi also believes Alvarez, 25, is the favourite for the fight at the T-Mobile Arena:
Canelo has lost only once in his 48-fight career, to pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2013.
His last fight was a unanimous-decision victory over the vastly experienced Miguel Cotto, a win that saw him claim the WBC middleweight crown—see highlights below:
By contrast, Khan's record stands at 31-3. Garcia inflicted the second of back-to-back defeats on him four years ago, the first having come against Lamont Peterson in December 2011.
Garcia stopped Khan inside four rounds in convincing fashion, but the 2004 Olympic silver medallist has since won five fights on the bounce to earn his title shot again.
He previously had designs on fighting Mayweather or Manny Pacquiao, but the Canelo fight is almost as big an opportunity for Khan.
He has already said that defeating Alvarez would be "be bigger than anything I've done," per Hobbs.
And, unlike many others, Garcia is giving Khan a significant chance to upset the odds and reach his career pinnacle.
