How to Fix Shaky Shane McMahon vs. Undertaker Feud Before WWE WrestleMania 32

Aaron BowerMar 16, 2016

When a wrestling feud is offering fans more questions than answers, you know there are a few problems with it.

That's the situation WWE has put itself in with Shane McMahon vs. The Undertaker right now.

Monday's edition of Raw—the first time Shane, Taker and Vince McMahon had all shared a ring since the match was booked—did nothing to help matters, either.

There are some burning issues that need to be addressed with this rivalry, but luckily for the company, there are a few ways to go about fixing things.

First of all, there desperately needs to be some sort of explanation as to why Taker is effectively turning heel and siding with Vince.

You wonder if the cheap heat they attempted to put on him by having him controversially beat Brock Lesnar was the beginning of an attempted heel turn, but that clearly will never happen, given how popular Taker is.

So why is he turning to the dark side and siding with the boss? What's crucial in the run-up to this match with Shane is an explanation for why Taker is doing what he is.

Here are some options for WWE to consider. Perhaps Vince is promising Taker a shot at the WWE World Heavyweight Championship? It's unlikely given that Roman Reigns will likely have a long run with the title after WrestleMania 32, but if Taker seriously wanted to go out on a high, winning the strap would be a good way to do it.

But a more realistic option could be Vince threatening to end The Undertaker's career if he doesn't side with him and beat Shane at WrestleMania.

After all, we've moved into an era of professional wrestling where reality and breaking kayfabe is the norm, so all the mystique surrounding Taker and his being The Deadman doesn't stand up too strongly anymore.

If Vince says he'll end his legacy and his career if he doesn't stick with him at Mania, it would lend logic to Taker's switching sides. When you factor in the frosty meeting Taker and Vince had a couple of weeks ago on Raw, it would suggest that he's perhaps being forced to do this against his will. Explaining that to the fans will at least add some clarity to the situation for them.

The other option is to have Taker cut a couple of scathing heel promos to truly align himself with Vince, but that doesn't seem likely, as Taker just won't get booed.

Then there's the issue of the match itself. Right now it feels like a foregone conclusion—although The Streak ended two years ago, you would imagine Shane's chances of inflicting a second WrestleMania defeat on Taker are incredibly slim.

Imagine Taker's two losses in 25 years of Mania coming against Lesnar...and a part-time wrestler?

So with Shane being laid out in the middle of the ring on Raw this past Monday, it should prompt him into a rethink in terms of strategy.

The week before Mania, with Taker established either as an outright heel due to the aforementioned promos or with everyone seeing he's being blackmailed, Shane could come out for the contract signing and refuses to sign. Why?

Because he's got someone else to fight for him.

This obviously draws parallels to WrestleMania 2000, when there was a McMahon in each corner for the main event. But with Vince and Shane both backing someone to get the job done to ensure effective control of the company, it would create much more doubt about a Taker victory.

The obvious contender is Sting, with WWE having such a depleted roster on its hands right now, but there are last-minute options for the company to consider.

It just makes much more sense than having Shane fight. You saw on Raw how out of place he looked when trying to mix it with an icon of the business; he's been away for a long time, and that ring rust doesn't just disappear at the drop of a hat.

WWE desperately needs to create doubt over the result and clarity over Taker's intentions. There's still time to do both of those things—but time is running out. What felt like a great feud to begin with is limping towards WrestleMania, and there's not long left to fix it.
