WWE Raw: Burning Questions to Address After March 14 Show

Erik BeastonMar 15, 2016

Anyone expecting the March 14 episode of WWE Raw to answer more questions than it asked found themselves in a state of disappointment by the time the broadcast came to an unsatisfying conclusion.

Sure, WWE Creative did a fine job of introducing fans to some of the matches they can expect to see come April 3 (Ryback-Kalisto, Dudleys-Usos) but it also failed to provide compelling chapters of some of its biggest stories, creating concerns that WrestleMania 32 may prove to be the most creatively bankrupt since the dark days of the mid-1990s.

There are countless issues with the build for Roman Reigns' WWE Heavyweight Championship match. Dolph Ziggler is suddenly embroiled in a semi-feud of sorts with The Authority. And then there is the Shane McMahon-Undertaker debacle that closed out Raw.

More questions exist in regard to WrestleMania this late in the build than at any time in recent memory. The show may be booked and the card solidified, but the state of the product and its stars is in flux.

And these are the questions that need to be addressed at this late stage following Monday's broadcast.

1. Can the Great Roman Reigns Experiment Be Salvaged?

The short answer? No.

Reigns has been ruined by WWE Creative. His complete lack of character has damned him, while management's insistence on pushing him despite fans' backlash is responsible for the hostile reactions that greet him in arenas across the country.

On Monday night, he returned from an injury and was booed out of the building by an otherwise apathetic audience which had not reacted for anything else on the show all night.

That is, except for Dean Ambrose, who really should be the one preparing for the showdown with Triple H at WrestleMania.

The rise of The Lunatic Fringe has only magnified the issues surrounding Reigns, leaving many to wonder why Vince McMahon has not called an audible. The Vince of old, with the grapefruits that he once bragged about so often, would have altered plans to ensure the most satisfying WrestleMania imaginable.

This Vince? He is resigned to forcing Reigns and reaping the consequences of his decision, all the while spinning it as a positive to the media.

2. What is the Endgame with Dolph Ziggler?

It is a bit curious that The Showoff has come from out of nowhere to find himself opposite The Authority in a B-feud of sorts for Triple H and Stephanie McMahon. Just a few weeks ago, he lost to Heath Slater, then embarked on a one-sided feud with Kevin Owens over the Intercontinental Championship.

Now he is wrestling televised matches with The Game on one of the most important Raws of the year.

Does WWE have greater plans for The Showoff than we suspect? Could his defiance in the face of power be a red herring of sorts, a way to throw us all off the pace of a potential heel turn and run as the power couple's latest, greatest chosen one?

The answers are unclear, but right now it appears as though Ziggler is in the midst of yet another renewed push, one that he will likely excel in and thrive in, only to see it cut off at the legs.

3. Is Shane McMahon vs. The Undertaker the Worst-Booked Main Event Ever?

Now that the excitement from Shane McMahon's return has died down quicker than a Zack Ryder title push, it is time to turn attention to the fact that the booking behind his match against Undertaker at WrestleMania 32 may be the worst of all time.

First, his issues with father Vince centered on preserving the family legacy. Then it was about wrestling control of Monday Night Raw away from Triple H and Stephanie. On Monday, it shifted to bringing about a new era in WWE while simultaneously questioning the morality of Undertaker and whether or not he is a puppet for Vince.

Booking has been all over the place, with key issues including The Phenom's willingness to do the bidding of The Chairman hanging over the bout like a storm cloud ready to burst.

Undertaker insisted on Raw that he was no man's puppet, only to do exactly as Vince had hoped he would, then standing tall over a fallen Shane like a big oaf suddenly surprised that he had been played.

So concerned with writing the latest chapter of the McMahon family drama is WWE Creative that it is constructing a disjointed story full of plot holes that will do more harm than good in a program of this importance.

The result will be a situation where Shane and Undertaker have to deliver a brilliant performance to offset the broken story that preceded it.
