Washington Football: The Ultimate Storyline Victims

Jarrett CarterSep 27, 2009

It’s not so bad that Washington lost to the Detroit Lions, as much as it is another harsh storyline for the team and the city to endure throughout this season.

Of all of the morose topics and trends of under-performance in Washington-area sports, no other team makes it so easy to rejoice in their misfortune. Already maligned with an inept owner, controversial players and one of the most fickle fan bases in the entire NFL, this team makes it a point to create new lows, and dip lower than those expectations.

Take the “injury” to Albert Haynesworth. Almost an exact rerun of what happened to the much-hyped signing of Jason Taylor last season. Except it wasn’t an injury at all. He was probably just gassed, just as Jason Brown predicted to earlier in the season.

What kind of multi-million dollar Pro Bowler gets CARTED OFF THE FIELD to return later as if nothing happened?

And then there’s the Jason Campbell storyline. The guy that Daniel Snyder and about 70 percent of Washington fans wanted to run out of the city in favor of the gun slinging Jay Cutler and the anointed Mark Sanchez. All he did was throw for 312 yards and two TDs today. He did throw a pick, but you can hardly blame today’s loss on him.

Then we move onto Jim Zorn, whom most are predicting will not make it back to Dulles Airport before being fired by Snyder. But who will replace him? Who can take this team of failure and make of it a shining example of redemption? Mike Holmgren perhaps? Bill Cowher?

And then the most obvious reason for you walk around with a LMAO mentality about this team. They lost to the Detroit Lions. The Detroit Lions with a rookie quarterback, non-descript defense, rookie head coach, detached fan base, and every other characteristic non-becoming of an NFL franchise.

The didn't win one game last season, and had lost two before Washington hit town. This isn’t to say that they were incapable of beating any other squads this year, because they will win a few more.

But to be the first to lose to literally, the worst team in the history of the NFL, doesn’t ring of a good season ahead for Washington.

And those are just a few of the storylines that splinter the sympathy of fans and observers every week. Normally, I’d taunt the fans for supporting a proven failure of a sports business model. But this hurts too bad. Even for me, who wants all of the bad things in life to happen to Daniel Snyder. I hope for better for the players, fans and coaches of this team that means so much to my native DMV.

But, since there’s so much worse to come for this team, we’d all be better off paying attention to something a little more positive. Like something finally going right for the Lions.
