Even if Triple H is revered by vocal pockets of the WrestleMania crowd, this will be nothing more than a proving ground for Reigns before being accepted as the next top star. It's the same proving ground John Cena endured at WrestleMania 22.
In fact, that venueโan intimidating 18,500-seat arena in Chicagoโwas even more hostile. Cena battled through vulgar chants and a partisan crowd to defeat Triple H and cement his legacy as theย biggest star of his generation. With Reigns playing the role of Cena in 2016, this makes for a much more intriguing story than WWE panicking because of a few hashtags.
Having Triple H win was the right call because Reigns needs this match against The Game. The story of scrappy Dean Ambrose punching his way to a world title is cute, but Reigns fending off a future WWE Hall of Famer and his detractors before the largest crowd in WWE history is near-biblical.
Maybe the story of the "hand-picked" former Shield member is predictable and creates angst among hardcore fans. But long term, this is the type of scripture that erects statues and immortalizes legends. The story of fans turning on once-popular babyfaces is nothing new. There's a reason "Big Jim" predicted this same scenario two years ago. It's almost like a hazing or a rite of passage.ย
Many will be able to look back at Reigns overperforming in two consecutive WrestleMania main events before a splitโmaybe even hostileโcrowd and not faltering. They'll read about his metaphorical entrance, during which he storms through a sea of fansโsome who like him and some who despise himโbefore coolly rising to the top of the promotion.
They'll watch him shrug off negative chants and pass every test a skeptical fan throws at him. If all goes according to plan, the "Roman sucks" chants will be bastardized into a tongue-in-cheek tribute, just like the "Cena sucks" chants, which sold poorly when made in to a t-shirt. Seriously, go to WWE Shopย and type in "Cena Sucks t-shirt." This happens.
Ambrose throwing a wrench into the WrestleMania picture could have been fun, but Triple H is the ideal opponent for Reigns. Having Roman fight, and possibly defeat, Ambrose at WrestleMania would be less symbolic than a win over Triple H.
There's no grass-roots movement in support of Triple H. Those who opt to cheer for Triple H at WrestleMania will only do so to spite Reigns. It would represent a the type of hurdle all WWE main eventers must overcome to be crystallized as icons.
Triple H was in this exact same position 10 years ago. Even though he eventually adopted the role of the babyface against Cena, losing that match clean sent a loud, clear message to WWE fans. At the time, it may have been upsetting, but in hindsight, it was a no-brainer.
Now it's Reigns' turn. From here on out, his job is to prove he's here to stay.
