New Day vs. Sheamus, King Barrett: Winner and Reaction from WWE Roadblock 2016

New Day's dominance over WWE's tag team division continued Saturday night at Roadblock, as they defeated League of Nations members Sheamus and King Barrett to retain the Tag Team Championships.

It appeared New Day were on the ropes twice before grabbing the win.

Xavier Woods distracted the referee long enough to thwart King Barrett's potential pinfall win after a kick to Big E's face, and Kofi Kingston was able to recover from a big tackle in time to land a bulldog on Sheamus.

That provided enough time for Big E to recover, deliver the Big Ending on Barrett and get the 3 count and continue the New Day's title reign that's been going on for almost seven months.

The rivalry between New Day and the League of Nations began at Fastlane when Kingston, Big E and Woods' Cutting Edge Peep Show segment with Edge and Christian was interrupted by the international foursome.

That led to New Day poking fun at the League of Nations on WWE programming and via social media, and it ultimately produced a title match Saturday in Toronto.

New Day entered the match with a ton of momentum on their side, as they defeated the team of Chris Jericho and AJ Styles on Monday's episode of Raw in a WWE Tag Team Championship match.

Jericho turned on Styles after the loss, but the match itself may have been the even bigger story, as it was one of the top tag bouts in recent memory and gave New Day even more credibility since they won the match cleanly.

Following that victory, Kofi expressed his opinion that nobody would be able to rip the tag team championships away from New Day:

Sheamus and Barrett brought a different mindset with them to Roadblock, as they looked to end the trio's 200-plus-day title reign.

Barrett even described the graphic manner in which he intended to get the job done:

Due to their immense popularity, however, New Day were fairly significant favorites at Roadblock, and they had the crowd on their side for the most part as well.

Kofi, Big E and Woods have excelled in a heel role for nearly a year, but they have inevitably gained a large following in the process due to their entertainment value. That much was clear Saturday when they went up against a true heel team in Sheamus and Barrett.

While it can't be said with certainty what WWE's intentions were, it is fair to wonder if putting New Day in a match with the League of Nations was meant to be a test run for a potential face turn in the near future.

Even though New Day have gotten to this level due largely to their masterful ability to generate heat as heels, they may have what it takes to translate their gimmick to the face end of the spectrum, while still keeping it exciting.

Saturday's win means it is likely that New Day will enter WrestleMania 32 as the tag team champions, although it is anyone's guess who they will face.

The Usos, Dudley Boyz and perhaps even the League of Nations could stake claim to a title shot on the grandest stage of them all. Regardless of who New Day faces, though, the odds are in favor of them making it entertaining, just as they did at Roadblock.
