Canelo Alvarez's Coach Mocks Amir Khan for Floyd Mayweather Blueprint
Canelo Alvarez's coach, Jose "Chepo" Reynoso, has laughed off Amir Khan's claim that he has learned the blueprint of how to beat the Mexican from Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s defeat of him.
Money is the only person to have beaten the current WBC middleweight champion in his 48-fight career, and Chepo has mocked Khan, 29, for thinking that he will be able to replicate the retired American, per ESPN Deportes (via BoxingScene.com's Miguel Rivera):
"If you look, during every conference the scenario is the same. All of the opponents have a lot of confidence. Alfonso Gomez composed a rap. James Kirkland and Erislandy Lara [made boasts on what they were going to do], but at the end of the night they all realised that they were wrong.
There is only one Mayweather. There were many times when I wanted to sing like Pavarotti, but I could never reach that voice. A lot of people want to be like Mayweather just like I want to be Pavarotti.
"
Khan and 25-year-old Alvarez are set to meet at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on May 7, with the Englishman stepping up from 147 to 155 pounds as he attempts to claim Canelo's belt.
There have been concerns raised over the possible size difference when the pair meet in the ring, and former three-time world champion Shane Mosley pithily summed up the reaction of many when the fight was announced:
However, Khan appears very confident and has cited Mayweather's 2013 victory—fought at 152 pounds—as the basis for his game plan on the night, per Radio Rahim of BoxingScene:
"I don't think there is nothing (sic) crazy about [taking this fight]. Look, Canelo is a guy who lost to Floyd Mayweather....a guy who is not a bigger puncher than me and a guy who is probably not as quick as me. Mayweather is a great technician and a great fighter in the sense that he knows how to set a game plan and stick to the game plan.
So obviously we know the blueprint to beat Canelo. Mayweather showed it. With my skills, the movement and speed that I have, I think that I can beat Canelo.
"
Khan has not fought since his underwhelming unanimous-decision victory over Chris Algieri in New York last May.
Meanwhile, Canelo's last fight was his 12-round win over Miguel Cotto in November, which won him the middleweight belt.
Highlights of that Las Vegas clash can be seen below:
The clash with Canelo is a huge opportunity for Khan, who has been deprived of a big fight for a number of years now.
The Bolton fighter was snubbed several times by Mayweather before the undefeated pound-for-pound king hung up his gloves, while a mooted clash with Manny Pacquiao also fell through at the end of last year, per the Guardian.
If Khan can beat Alvarez and take his middleweight belt, it will be the high point of his career—which has included an Olympic silver medal and two light-welterweight world titles.
However, Chepo is clearly giving Khan no chance of achieving what only Mayweather has ever managed to before.
