WWE SmackDown Results: Winners, Grades, Reaction and Highlights from March 10
Every week on Bleacher Report, I take an in-depth look at WWE SmackDown to recap the results, offer analysis and grade the matches, segments and anything else that takes place on the show, as well as make a few predictions for future events.
Thursday's show featured the SmackDown debut of Sami Zayn, and he brought the same passion to his performance that made him so popular in NXT.
We also saw some more forward movement with storylines for Roadblock and WrestleMania 32. We even found out which team The New Day will be defending the Tag Team Championships against on Saturday.
Let's take a look at everything that happened on this week's SmackDown.
The Miz and Kevin Owens vs. Sami Zayn and Neville
1 of 6The show opened with The Miz interviewing Sami Zayn on MizTV. Zayn mixed his history with Kevin Owens into their ongoing feud to make things feel much more personal.
Being the pot-stirrer he is, The Miz brought out Owens to talk about why he attacked Zayn in NXT. Zayn vowed to take the Intercontinental Championship away from Owens, planting the seeds for a possible WrestleMania match.
Neville showed up to remind us all how he has problems with Owens too. Surprisingly, it was The Miz who threw the first punch, leading to a tag team match.
Putting three of the best talents to ever come through NXT and a former WWE champion together for a match was bound to be entertaining, but Zayn and Neville made sure it was memorable.
Owens did what everyone expected him to do and bailed on his partner, leaving The Miz to suffer a Helluva Kick to the face and take the pin.
Grade: B+
Notes and Highlights
- Zayn has never been called the best on the mic, but his performance in this segment was outstanding. It looked like he was conflicted about Owens' actions.
- The Miz was looking more technically proficient than usual during this bout.
- Neville's corkscrew moonsault off Zayn's back was one of the most impressive things he has done in a long time. His aerial ability is on a different level to everyone else's.
- Does Zayn's music remind anyone else of those few months when The Mighty Mighty Bosstones were popular?
Brie Bella vs. Summer Rae
2 of 6After another ridiculous segment involving R-Truth and Goldust. Brie Bella took on Summer Rae in a rematch from Monday's Raw.
Lana sat on the commentary table while the match was taking place instead of sitting in a chair like a normal person.
She tried to distract Brie, but it didn't work and Summer ended up tapping out to the Yes Lock. However, The Ravishing Russian had the last laugh, hitting Brie with her own finisher for the second time in a week.
There's not much more to say about this segment. It did little to advance the storyline, and it certainly wasn't a great match.
Grade: D+
Notes and Highlights
- I know there's a Yakov Smirnoff joke to be made about Lana sitting on the table, but I can't think of what it is.
- Why did WWE bother breaking up Summer and Tyler Breeze? Now neither of them has anything going on.
- Lana was so much better with Rusev. She was more confident and delivered some great promos.
Chris Jericho Explains His Actions
3 of 6Chris Jericho came out to some solid heat to discuss why he attacked AJ Styles after they lost their match against The New Day on Raw.
Jericho said his feelings were hurt when the crowd was chanting for AJ Styles instead of him, and he talked about how he has seen a lot of people come and go and that he is still the best in the world at what he does.
Y2J went full heel in this promo, and it was a breath of fresh air. The last time he was a bad guy, he changed his whole image. We finally have the cocky heel Jericho back.
He took a Y2AJ shirt and burned it in a garbage can to show everyone how their team was through. He even called Styles a rookie to rub salt into the wound.
The segment ended with the image of the fire burning in front of Jericho. While the symbolism was about as subtle as a slap in the face, it was effective.
Grade: B
Notes and Highlights
- Wrestlers have feeling too, guys.
- Managing to go this long without a major injury is impressive from Jericho, especially when you consider how may risks he has taken during matches.
- This might be the fastest turnaround between a team forming, getting merchandise and breaking up in WWE history.
- What was that shirt made of? The way it burned was strange.
The Lucha Dragons vs. League of Nations
4 of 6Sin Cara and Kalisto took on Sheamus and King Barrett. This feud has seen just about every combination of League of Nations members taking on The Lucha Dragons in singles and tag team competition, so this was nothing new.
While there was plenty of entertainment to be had, this match was a little too formulaic. The babyfaces got in some offense, the heels controlled the middle portion, the babyfaces rallied and the heels cheated to win.
The one good thing about this encounter was King Barrett got the win for his team. Seeing him get the pin was great, but it was also a reminder of how poorly he has been used over the past year.
Grade: C
Notes and Highlights
- Sheamus looked like he had been in a car accident with all the scrapes and bruises around his eye.
- The announcers informed us of Sheamus and Barrett's upcoming Tag Team Championship match against The New Day at Roadblock.
- Kalisto and Sin Cara are starting to wear different colors instead of matching each other. Maybe it's a sign of an impending breakup.
The Usos, Dolph Ziggler and Dean Ambrose vs. The Wyatt Family
5 of 6The Usos teamed up with Dolph Ziggler and Dean Ambrose to take on the entire Wyatt Family in the main event. It would be difficult to find two teams with less in common.
Ziggler, Ambrose and The Usos are known for taking risks, while the Wyatts are monsters who rely more on their power. Granted, Luke Harper has been known to put his body on the line, but he doesn't do it as often as he used to.
This match was given a lot of time, so all eight men got a chance to show off their skills. The first half of the match was good, but the sequence at the end was incredible.
Everyone worked like a well-oiled machine to make sure everything happened at the right time and every move landed. Eight-man bouts are often sloppy, but this was a great example of how much fun they can be.
Grade: B+
Notes and Highlights
- Seeing Harper and Ambrose kick things off brought back memories of the awesome matches The Shield used to have with The Wyatt Family.
- WWE should put a little counter in the corner of the screen to count how many people use superkicks through the show.
- They might be a little repetitive in their moveset, but The Usos can get the crowd excited faster than anyone else.
Final Thoughts and Predictions
6 of 6All things considered, this was a good episode of SmackDown. The Divas match wasn't so great, but we got some good storyline development and entertaining action.
Zayn's SmackDown wrestling debut was a nice surprise after he was only advertised to appear on MizTV, and it's safe to assume he will be challenging Owens for the IC title at WrestleMania 32.
We are just days away from WWE Roadblock. As of this writing, only four matches have been announced for the event, according to WWE.com. This week's predictions relate to the outcomes of those contests.
Predictions
- Enzo Amore and Colin Cassady will defeat Scott Dawson and Dash Wilder, but they won't win the NXT Tag Team Championships.
- The New Day will retain the WWE Tag Team Championships against The League of Nations.
- Brock Lesnar will defeat Bray Wyatt.
- The entire Wyatt Family will try to attack Lesnar but will end up being taken out by The Beast.
- Triple H will retain the WWE World Heavyweight Championship.
What did you think of this week's SmackDown, and what are your predictions for Roadblock?
