After the match ended, Jericho turned on Styles and assaulted his partner, via WWE:
What followed was three Codebreakers from Jericho, via WWE Universe:
Following a feud that featured matches on Raw and SmackDown, as well as at the Fastlane pay-per-view, Y2J and the Phenomenal One recently formed an alliance in attempt to take the tag titles away from Big E, Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods.
Jericho and Styles defeated New Day last week on Raw in a non-title match, which set the stage for a clash with the straps on the line.
There was a great deal of skepticism regarding the team of Jericho and Styles because of the fact that they had some bitter battles previously.
Even so, the Canadian Superstar insisted that his partnership with WWE's newest Superstar was the real deal:
Styles played up to that notion as well with several tweets, including this hilarious parody from the movie Stepbrothers:
As it turned out, the skeptics were right, and now New Day will be seeking its next challenger.
With the exception of a 70-day title run by the Prime Time Players, New Day has held the title since April 2015.
Monday's title match came at an intriguing time, since WrestleMania 32 is less than one month away. The Tag Team Championship figures to be featured on the show in some capacity, but the possibility of a major shake-up was present.
That ultimately wasn't the case, though, as The New Day retained its title and is now in line to enter the biggest show of the year at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, with the belts in tow.
It remains unclear what role the Tag Team Championship will have, but there will likely be no shortage of contenders.
The Dudley Boyz and Usos appear to be strong candidates to make a push for the No. 1 contendership now that the duo of Jericho and Styles is a thing of the past.
While WWE's tag division hasn't been booked consistently in recent years, the company undoubtedly has some great talent in those ranks currently, which could make for a great match on wrestling's biggest stage.
Monday's title match may have been a sign of things to come, and that is a huge positive for tag team wrestling as April 3's WrestleMania approaches.
