WWE NXT Results: Biggest Winners, Losers and Moments from March 2

Erik BeastonMar 3, 2016

There was no bigger winner on the March 2 episode of WWE Network's NXT than Austin Aries, who made a monumental debut in front of rabid, screaming fans in CFE Arena, Florida. What should have been a triumphant return to the national spotlight, though, turned into a painful reminder he is in unfamiliar territory.

Aries endured a vicious assault at the hands of Baron Corbin, another big winner from Wednesday's show. The Lone Wolf left the celebrated in-ring competitor lying on the arena floor following End of Days—payback for being left out of the NXT Championship hunt by general manager William Regal.

Aries has immediately entered into a high-profile program, and Corbin gets the opportunity to work with one of the hottest stars on the roster. Their feud should result in some outstanding matches if their interactions at the NXT Live event this writer attended back in February were any indication.

Those two Superstars may have stolen the show on Wednesday, but they were far from the only winners. This week's broadcast was rife with them, including two NXT champions who delivered a fantastic main event.

It was also not without its losers, one of whom is in dire need of advancement.

Winners: Neville and Finn Balor

The match wrestled by Neville and Finn Balor may not have been a Match of the Year candidate—or close to one—but it was a phenomenal television bout that saw both men shine bright before the current NXT champion, Balor, put the former one away with Bloody Sunday.

Neville has been wasted on the main roster for so long it was nice to see him back in an NXT ring, reminding fans of why he is considered one of the best pound-for-pound wrestlers on the planet. His work as the de facto heel, grounding Balor and keeping him subdued for the most part, was phenomenal and showcased his diversity between the ropes.

The Man That Gravity Forgot is not a one-dimensional spot monkey, and Wednesday's performance proved it.

Balor, on the other hand, continued to elevate the importance of the NXT Championship through his performance. Though it was a non-title bout, Balor worked as hard as he would if his most prized possession were at stake. His perseverance and his dedication to his craft make every other star on the roster work harder—the sign of a franchise player.

There was no screwy finish or interference from anyone not involved. Instead, it was a wrestler's wrestling match—an example of what two greats can accomplish when the handcuffs are taken off and they are allowed the opportunity to do what they do best.

Loser: Elias Samson

The Drifter seems destined to wind up here week in and week out if someone in Creative does not do something about the mind-numbing enhancement matches he is being forced into every other week.

Elias Samson is still far too inexperienced to take the squash matches he has competed in thus far and turn them into anything but the uninteresting fare they have been to this point. He does not have the ability to make them more interesting through a flashy move set or natural charisma.

Thus, every time he enters the squared circle to dispatch of a glorified jobber, fans are subjected to the same knee strikes, leg drops and generic neckbreaker finish they see in every one of Samson's matches.

Some of that criticism lies at his feet, but a lot should go to management for not camouflaging his weaknesses in better settings.

Samson is someone who needs to be in the ring working with Apollo Crews, Finn Balor, Sami Zayn and Samoa Joe. He is someone who would benefit exponentially from mixing it up with Superstars who have a wealth of experience and could teach him on the fly.

Like Baron Corbin not all that long ago, Samson has nothing to gain from bowling over guys in two minutes. He cannot learn that way, and he damn sure cannot improve.

Make the changes now, Triple H and company, or risk irreparably damaging a unique character with the potential to be someone special in the NXT Universe.

Winner: Santana Garrett

Santana Garrett has wrestled a handful of matches for NXT of late, and she looked strong in each of them. She never looks out of place or worse than any of her peers—a sign of her considerable in-ring talent.

A celebrated indy worker and second-generation wrestler, she is far from ignorant when it comes to the mat game. Having had a firsthand look at what she is capable of between the ropes, it is a wonder Triple H has not offered her a contract to help bolster the women's division.

Wednesday's match with Emma may have been a glorified squash, but Garrett looked impressive during her brief comeback spots, and she sold extremely well for the Aussie's offense. Making the most of your opportunities and simultaneously putting over your opponent as ordered is the best way to catch the eye of management.

Whether she lives her dream as a WWE-contracted wrestler sometime in the near future, though, remains to be seen.
