Amir Khan Questions Canelo Alvarez's Punch Power After Mayweather, Cotto Fights

Rory MarsdenMar 2, 2016

Amir Khan is sceptical of Canelo Alvarez's reputation as a power puncher ahead of the pair's May 7 fight in Las Vegas.

Critics of the clash for Alvarez's WBC middleweight title have indicated that it will be a one-sided battle because of the Mexican's power and the fact that Khan is having to make a big step up, even for the 155-pound catchweight, per Bad Left Hook's Wil Esco.

Khan's last fight saw him claim an unconvincing unanimous-decision victory over welterweight Chris Algieri, but the Englishman does not believe Alvarez has as much power as is often claimed, per Keith Idec of BoxingScene.com: "Is he really this dangerous, big puncher that everyone makes him out as? He hit [Floyd] Mayweather. Miguel Cotto, he hit him with clean shots. So I'm thinking, is he really this dangerous, devastating puncher that I should be scared of? Time will tell."

Alvarez, 25, won his middleweight title against Cotto in November by unanimous decision in Las Vegas—see highlights below:

The fight against Khan will be his first defence of the middleweight crown, and he is the heavy favourite to prevail, per Idec.

The potential for a huge size and power difference between the pair has not gone unnoticed, and former three-time world champion Shane Mosley only sees the fight going one way:

Alvarez's only defeat of his career so far has been to the now-retired Mayweather back in 2013, and his professional record stands at 46-1-1.

Khan, meanwhile, has lost three times in his 34 professional fights, two of them coming back-to-back at light welterweight in 2011 and 2012, to Lamont Peterson and Danny Garcia, respectively.

The 29-year-old has won his last five fights and is clearly confident ahead of his clash with Alvarez, per beIN Sports:

Khan, at times, looked set for a big clash with Mayweather or Manny Pacquiao, but both opportunities passed him by.

The chance to step up a division and fight for Alvarez's world title, though, is a huge opportunity for the Bolton-born fighter, and he is certainly talking a good game in the build-up to the T-Mobile Arena clash.

It will be up to him to prove the doubters wrong and follow through on his talk when he gets into the ring.
