Lana vs. Brie Bella Feud Must Not Be a Part of WWE WrestleMania 32 Card
Regardless of how desperate WWE gets in booking WrestleMania 32 thanks to a depleted roster, adding Lana vs. Brie Bella is not a viable option. That's a match worthy of dimmer spotlight than what The Show of Shows offers.
A rivalry in just its early stages, Lana vs. Brie is a mildly appealing sideshow that could fill time during a down time in the calendar.
It doesn't belong anywhere near a WrestleMania, though. Lana's inexperience, Brie's level of talent and limited space on center stage make it something WWE needs to save for another show.
The narrative of Lana and Brie's animosity began unexpectedly on Monday's Raw.
Lana interrupted Brie during a backstage interview. Wearing an unsubtle smirk, she insulted the former Divas champ and her husband.
To signal to the audience that this wasn't just some one-time chance encounter, Lana made sure to emerge when Brie lost to Naomi that night. The Ravishing Russian clearly delighted in Brie's defeat.
This unpredictable move from WWE and surprise pairing is intriguing. Scott Fishman of the Miami Herald, for one, agrees:
However, this story is better as a subplot, as a midcard bout on Payback, as a way to round out a card at some point in the year. The timing of this feud's first chapters has one wondering if WWE's plan is to instead make it a part of the biggest show of the year.
Gene Mrosko of Cageside Seats spoke for many watching when he asked, "This must be leading to a match between the ladies, right? And could it possibly take place at WrestleMania 32?"
For WWE to make that event the best it can be, the answer can't be "yes" to that second question.
WrestleMania spots are too precious to use on Lana's first match. Putting someone that inexperienced in the ring in such a prime position is asking for a letdown. That's a huge part of why so many fans pushed back against the idea of Braun Strowman possibly taking on Undertaker at AT&T Stadium.
And it's not as if Brie is the kind of performer who can carry The Ravishing Russian to a passable performance.
This isn't Bayley playing ring general with Eva Marie or Kurt Angle helping lead Shane McMahon to a standout match. This is one of the roster's most limited wrestlers stepping into the ring with someone on a lower rung than herself.
That's simply a bad idea.
It would have made more sense had this been last year, when Lana was a red-hot commodity. As Rusev's silver-tongued manager, she flourished. Her presence and character made her one of the most entertaining parts of WWE TV each week.
But that was before the awful storyline with Dolph Ziggler that left her depleted of momentum. That was before WWE pushed her to the side and rarely used her.
She hasn't regained that spark she had during the peak of Rusev's rise. Instead, as Fighting Spirit Magazine pointed out, she has been trending downward:
WWE has to build her back up before she has enough buzz to warrant a match at WrestleMania.
It would be baffling to have two women's matches and leave out Paige, Naomi and Natalya. It would be a stunning move to choose to showcase Lana and Brie individually but cram midcard champions Kevin Owens and Kalisto into a crowded ladder match.
Let the bad blood between Brie and Lana brew slowly. It can all overflow once WrestleMania is in the rear-view mirror.
