Rory McIlroy at Honda Classic 2016: Friday Score and Reaction

Joe PantornoFeb 26, 2016

The world's No. 3 golfer Rory McIlroy is in danger of missing the cut at the Honda Classic after shooting a two-over 72 for the second-consecutive round on Friday. At four over for the tournament, he is one stroke over the projected cut at three over.

However, there is a chance that he does make the third round, per DFS Albatross:

Regardless of his chances, McIlroy did not feel like talking after his round, per Randall Mell of GolfChannel.com:

McIlroy's day started innocently enough as he went one under through his first five holes thanks to a birdie on No. 12. But his trouble began on the par three No. 15 as the tough course at PGA National began to take its toll.

The PGA changed the hole location on No. 15 and moved it right, more toward the water. With blustery wind conditions, it didn't help ambitious golfers that were trying to lower their scores as quickly as possible.

McIlroy was one of them, and he got burned for it, sending his first shot into the water. It resulted in a double bogey that raised his Thursday score to one over.

He came up with a solid answer on No. 16 with a chip-in birdie to get back to even, via the PGA Tour:

Things didn't get much better on the front nine after McIlroy parred holes No. 17 and 18. He bogeyed No. 1 after he missed a seven-foot putt to save par but made up for it with a birdie on No. 3.

The wheels fell of on No. 5, and it was the water yet again that provided his downfall. The hole was placed toward the very left of the green and just five feet to the left of the cup was water.

If McIlroy sent his shot right, he would have had a ton of real estate to work with on the green. Instead, he pulled his shot left and found the water. It set up a triple bogey and put him at three under on the day and five under on the tournament.

ESPN's Jason Sobel tried to find solace in McIlroy's tough morning by pointing out that he finished the round. He withdrew from the tournament last season due to an impacted wisdom tooth

He finished his day with a birdie on nine, but McIlroy will now have to rely on the field to keep him in the tournament. If PGA National frustrates others like it did McIlroy, then he'll have a chance to make the third round. If not, then he'll be headed home early.
