Texas Welcomes Me to the Stadium by Beating Down UTEP
I have lived in Austin for almost two years but had yet to make it to a Texas game mostly because last season I had to park and fuel all of the rich people's private jets on gameday rather than enjoying the game. I no longer work there, and I finally got to my first game.
Though it was more like a practice than a game.
I had heard for years that they put on a good show before and during the game, and they didn't disappoint. The stadium was mostly full a good 15 minutes before the game for an opponent that most likely would not be much of a challenge.
Then came a series of videos and on field festivities that had the entire crowd on their feet. It was amazing to me how much love these people have for their past players.
The loudest cheer came for Vince Young when he came on the videoboard, which by the way is almost as amazing as the boards at the Cowboys' stadium in Arlington.
From all of the different songs, to Bevo, to the band, and everything else it was truly impressive. The only cheer that may have been as loud as the one for Vince Young was the one for George Strait, who was an honorary captain for the coin toss.
The game started out just as exciting, assuming you were cheering for Texas. Colt McCoy looked like a Heisman contender, and the whole team was firing on all cylinders. Jordan Shipley had a great all-around game and reaffirmed his importance for the success of this team.
By the end of the first quarter, the game just got ridiculous. People even started to tone down their cheering some because stuff was happening so fast.
By halftime, the stadium started to empty on the side that was in the sun. It was pretty hot, so I can't say that I blame them.
I much prefer a more competitive game, but at least it was lopsided in our favor. It was still a lot of fun and worth sitting in the heat, and being packed in like sardines.
Texas is a school that has all the tradition and history that makes college football great. I have been to quite a few games in a lot of different places, but this was by far the most impressive game I have attended.
There really is a huge difference between programs like Texas and the smaller teams that are still trying to establish themselves.
I have been a diehard BYU fan since I was a little kid and I love going to their games, no matter where they are. The game in Arlington was particularly fantastic as a BYU fan, and a secondary Texas fan.
But in all of the games I have been to, I have never seen such an impressive display before the game. Schools like BYU, Utah, and Boise State could learn a lot from schools like Texas.
So thank you Texas for putting on a good show and making the day a pleasant experience. And lastly:
OU SUCKS!
