WWE NXT Results: Biggest Winners, Losers and Moments from February 24

Erik BeastonFeb 25, 2016

Chants of "you can't wrestle" rained down upon her Wednesday night, but by the time the tag team main event concluded, Eva Marie had established herself as the biggest winner from the February 24 episode of NXT on WWE Network.

The Total Divas star capitalized on the work done by Nia Jax to pick up the win for her team over NXT women's champion Bayley and Carmella in true heel fashion. In the process, she managed to keep herself in championship contention, despite the fact that she did very little to ensure victory.

From a storytelling standpoint, she was excellent as the opportunistic heel. Between the ropes, she looked as good as she ever has, her bumps looking natural and fluid and her offense more convincing than it has been.

Perhaps she was motivated by the UCF crowd or perhaps her confidence was at a high.

Whatever the case may have been, she no longer looked out of place nor like the weakest link. For the first time in her in-ring career, she looked like she belonged, and that is a major step for wrestling's most hated woman.

There were other winners from Wednesday's show, including a tag team on the verge of greatness and another Diva making major strides as an in-ring performer.

But there was a significant loser as well, one who should not be in that position but is.

Winners: American Alpha

Jason Jordan and Chad Gable continue to impress between the ropes, generating tremendous crowd responses while displaying tenacity and intensity.

Gable has developed into a fantastic babyface in peril, enduring tremendous beatings before making the hot tag to Jordan, who has finally found himself as the explosive suplex-throwing machine. Together, they pop crowds, who appreciate their unique dynamic and their fiery in-ring performances.

Wednesday night's win over Blake and Murphy was about as one-sided an extended squash as you will see. Even though the former tag champions did have a heat segment on Gable, it was still a glorified squash, with the upstarts overwhelming their opponents before putting them away with Grand Amplitude.

Based on footage aired later in the night, it looks as though Dash and Dawson may have unfinished business with Enzo Amore and Colin Cassady, but they should be looking over their shoulders, because the team most likely to dethrone them is American Alpha.

Loser: Apollo Crews

The dynamic Apollo Crews finds himself in an unenviable position right now, an extraordinary wrestler whose lack of character development has left him shuffled into the midcard when he should be garnering respect and recognition at the top of the lineup.

At least part of the character work cannot be blamed on him. He has not had the opportunity to express himself on the microphone, nor has he been involved in any feuds that would necessitate him doing any more than the bare minimum as far as promos go.

What is on him, though, is his lack of in-ring charisma.

Yes, there is a lot that Crews does well. He is agile, incredibly quick and powerful, but he does not connect with the crowd. He rarely even takes the time to acknowledge them in the middle of a match. Add to that the fact that he has not meshed out a signature set of maneuvers, and has constantly changed up his finish, and you have a wrestler still searching for his identity.

The result is a lackluster run for Crews of late, who is stuck demolishing enhancement talent and newcomers rather than consistently competing in main event programs.

Winner: Carmella

The Princess of Staten Island is rapidly improving as an in-ring worker, and a lot of that can be attributed to working with skilled professional wrestlers of late.

First, she had the win over Emma prior to her NXT Women's Championship match. Though she rarely picks up a victory, the Australian-born Diva is a superb wrestler from who Carmella could learn from. Add to that her championship clash with Bayley, her best friend on- and off-screen, and you have plenty of opportunity to learn on the job.

Wednesday night, fans got to see some of the advancements Carmella has made in recent weeks. She excelled as the sympathetic babyface on the receiving end of a beatdown by Nia Jax and Eva Marie. Then, when the time was right, she showed tremendous fire during her comeback and even threw in a celebratory moonwalk early in the match.

Watching Carmella and the above-mentioned Apollo Crews is like watching night and day.

Whereas Crews had the in-ring part down by the time he got to NXT, Carmella did not. But as witnessed on this week's broadcast, Carmella certainly has the charisma part of the job down, and that has bought her time with the crowd as she develops into a very entertaining professional wrestler.
