After qualifying and the Can-Am Duels, the field of 40 drivers is set, with 20-year-old Chase Elliott on the pole to start.

He's already made history, as Road & Track pointed out:

And he's doing it with a familiar number. He has taken over the No. 24 car from legend Jeff Gordon, who retired after the 2015 season.

Elliott is joined by 2012 Daytona 500 winner Matt Kenseth on the front row. Here is the complete starting lineup.

All eyes are going to be on veteran Dale Earnhardt Jr., though, who has been extremely solid at Daytona International Speedway throughout his career.

He's bringing in a car he's grown very fond of, racing it five times last season and collecting three wins.

In 16 races at the Daytona 500, he's won twice and had 10 top-10 finishes. At the track itself, he's recorded 16 wins.

He kept the good form running during the Can-Am Duels on Thursday night when he won duel No. 1 at Daytona. He'll start in third place Sunday.

This is also the 15th anniversary of the death of his father, Dale Sr., who died in Turn 4 of the 2001 Daytona 500. Not only will Dale Jr. be racing for his third title at the biggest race of the year, but this year's event will have an extra bit of sentimentality attached to it.
