Bryce Dejean-Jones Signed, Jarnell Stokes Waived by Pelicans

Tim DanielsFeb 19, 2016

The New Orleans Pelicans announced Friday they have brought Bryce Dejean-Jones back into the fold and waived the recently acquired Jarnell Stokes to clear roster space.

The team noted the swap on its official site. Dejean-Jones has appeared in 11 games, including eight starts, for the Pelicans this season after signing a pair of 10-day contracts. Terms of the latest agreement were not immediately released.

Yahoo Sports (via John Reid the Times-Picayune) reported Thursday the Pelicans acquired Stokes from the Miami Heat in exchange for a protected second-round pick. It was a cost-saving move by Miami. Stokes' stay on the New Orleans roster lasted around 24 hours.

Dejean-Jones averaged 6.3 points, 3.5 rebounds and 1.1 assists while playing a shade under 20 minutes per game in those prior appearances for the Pelicans.

Scott Kushner of the Advocate passed along comments the 23-year-old rookie guard made during his initial stint with the team in January: "I like it here. I think the system suits me well and I was given the chance to go out and play and make the most of it. I mean, I'm on a 10-day so you only have so many chances to prove yourself and they're giving them to me."

It's certainly a good fit for a player looking to prove himself. The Pelicans need backcourt depth, with star shooting guard Tyreke Evans expected to miss the rest of the campaign due to a knee injury, per Shams Charania of The Vertical.

Dejean-Jones displayed enough potential, highlighted by connecting on 39 percent of his three-point attempts, during those 10-day contracts to warrant a longer look. He should receive pretty consistent minutes as part of the rotation down the stretch.
