2016 Westminster Dog Show: Top Highlights, Photos and Twitter Reaction

Adam WellsFeb 16, 2016

The 2016 Westminster Dog Show continued on Tuesday with daytime sessions at Piers 92/94 in New York. The sporting, working and terrier groups took their moments in the spotlight before the Best in Show champion is crowned in the evening.

The competition features more than 2,700 dogs battling it out in Best of Breed competitions, as well as Best in Show. The terrier group has produced the most Best in Show winners in the 139-year history of this event, though a beagle—Ch Tashtins Lookin For Trouble, aka "Miss P"—currently holds the crown.

Even though the dogs in the Westminster Dog Show are known for their elegance and grace, there are moments when they are capable of looking awkward on the big stage, per Westminster Dog Show on Twitter:

Those moments behind the scenes are rare. More often there will be one of those adorable divas, such as this big hulk wearing a bib that's branded with his image, per Westminster Dog Show on Twitter:

That bib could be the equivalent of Beatrice's "Busy Bee" toy from the movie Best In Show. In the movie, her owners, Meg and Hamilton Swan, fear she won't be able to settle down if she doesn't have it in her possession.

Some dogs are just chill when they get any kind of attention, whether it comes on the stage or walking around, like this little fellow with the most serene look in its eyes, per Modern Dog:

With so many dogs in competition for the title of Best In Show, the Associated Press (via the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel) noted Rumor, a Wisconsin German shepherd, has the crowd in her back pocket following Monday's opening sessions:

"

Only one German shepherd has ever won Westminster, the famed and fittingly named Manhattan in 1987.

Rumor was the perfect picture of a well-groomed champion in winning the herding group. Poised, she seemed to look at the crowd as she ran across the green carpet.

Only after she was picked did she break character and jump up a bit.

"

Rumor, at four years old, is a decorated champion with 101 career titles to her name already. She captured the AKC/Eukanuba crown in December, giving her momentum to take home the Westminster title on Tuesday night.

With most of the field whittling down for Best In Show honors, the afternoon sessions were largely about capturing adorable moments on camera, with this being a perfect example, per Westminster Dog Show on Twitter:

A power nap is crucial to having success at the Westminster Dog Show. It takes a lot of energy to constantly look your best as well as keep the enthusiasm level high for judges and fans.

There's still plenty of competition left for this evening, so dogs and their owners will be looking to find the right formula for success in the final hours before things heat up.
