What to Watch For

A German shepherd hasn't won the Westminster Dog Show since 1987, per the Westminster Kennel Club's website, but that could change this year. Johnny Avello from the Wynn in Las Vegas thinks, at 4-1, the shepherd will take home Best in Show for the first time in almost 30 years, per Teresa Bonner of PennLive.com.

That possibility seems to be off to a good start after Monday's competition. Rumor, a four-year-old German shepherd, won first place in the herding group.

The Westminster Dog Show tweeted this video of Rumor's win:

But this year's show is going to be filled with feel-good stories. One of them is Hector, a 12-year-old Cesky terrier who has been a mainstay in the dog show for a decade. But it's not just Hector who will be getting the attention. It's his handler, 42-year-old Loren Marino, who has cancer.

“I’m going to keep going and the dogs keep me going," Marino said, per Erik Larsen of USA Today. "And I have a high pain tolerance, and I thank the Navy for that."

Another one to look out for is five-year-old Ryder, a wirehaired vizsla who also spends time as a therapy dog for handler Brian White in Buffalo, per Mark Belcher of WIVB in Buffalo.

Bob Ryan of the Boston Globe has made it clear who he's picking to win Tuesday:

It's been a long time since a German shepherd has been the best dog of the year, but after what Rumor did Monday, it could happen. The crowd surely is behind that idea, per the Westminster Dog Show.
