Recap
All eyes were naturally on Anderson's clash with Van Gerwen. It was the current champ who took the first leg after hitting tops. But two maximums got Van Gerwen back in it and set the tone for a high-scoring match.
Van Gerwen went 3-1 up after Anderson missed bullseye and the Green Machine responded with a 105 checkout. It was a sign Van Gerwen was in ruthless mood in Newcastle.
The Dutchman's third maximum helped put him 4-3 ahead, as the pace of scoring accelerated, per Live Darts:
A checkout on 85 put MVG three legs ahead, before he finished the job after setting a lightning-fast pace:
Next up, Taylor took on James Wade to close out the night's matches. The Power started by breaking throw, helping to create a 2-1 lead.
He then hit double-18 twice, before taking down double-seven to go further in front. The 122 checkout put the pressure on Wade.
The Taylor blitz continued as he took down 177 at 5-1 in front. Double-16 then made it 6-1. It was soon 7-1, as Taylor let everyone know he's far from finished.
His performance on doubles stood out:
Wade was also in action earlier, taking on Smith, who was trying to make amends after a dismal introduction to Premier League life. He should have had an advantage with Wade playing twice because of Robert Thornton withdrawing due to illness, per Sky Sports' James Dielhenn.
There was some exceptional finishing early on, with both players registering triple-digit checkouts. It wasn't until the fourth leg that the first maximum was registered with Smith taking down 180.
Bully Boy soon built a 3-2 lead after breaking throw following a costly miss from Wade. Live Darts Twitter had the details:
The pressure then got to both players. First, Smith threw away a chance to go 4-2 up after missing eight darts at doubles. Wade, who missed four at doubles himself during the leg, eventually steadied his nerve to even things at three apiece.
But Wade later missed tops to go 5-4 ahead, yet Smith failed to take advantage. Wade then broke through and took down double-10 to guarantee a point, as the difference in Premier League experience began to show.
Wade soon wrapped things up, with Sky Sports Darts showing the decisive throw:
Those missed doubles at 3-2 ultimately cost Smith and condemned the Premier League newcomer to a third straight defeat.
Lewis jumped out to a big early lead against Dave Chisnall. Jackpot started with an 11-darter, before a 78 checkout gave him a two-leg advantage, despite some fine scoring from Chisnall:
Lewis was soon four up, and things looked ominous for Chisnall. But a break of throw got the latter back into it.
Chisnall was being bossed, despite some prolific scoring form the oche:
But Lewis continued his dominance to move 6-1 ahead, before taking a ton out again gave Chisnall brief hope. Lewis soon wasted a quintet of match darts to let Chisnall reduce the deficit to just 6-4.
Yet Lewis managed to close things out comfortably enough in the end and take top spot in the table.
Raymond van Barneveld was typically mercurial early on against Peter Wright. The Dutchman began in spectacular fashion:
But three missed darts at doubles during the second leg let Wright draw level, before Van Barneveld took out a ton to go back in front. He soon hit a key double to go 3-2 up:
Wright then missed four darts at doubles to allow Van Barneveld to double his advantage. But Snakebite battled back with a maximum to eventually tie things at four.
The PDC.tv Twitter feed provided highlights of the 180:
RVB hit back with a maximum of his own, before a double-10 from Wright evened it at five legs apiece. Snakebite then hit a 75 checkout to break throw. A wayward throw at tops had doomed Van Barneveld.
Wright didn't waste the advantage, eventually taking down double-12 to win and maintain his perfect start:
Van Gerwen has served notice by getting off the mark with a demolition of Anderson. Making such swift work of the world champion will let the rest know how serious Van Gerwen is about winning this league, even though Taylor's performance offered a reminder of his enduring class.
