Overview
Sri Lanka notched up an impressive five-wicket win in the first T20, thanks largely to their fast bowlers. India were bowled out for just 101 after Sri Lanka won the toss and chose to field first. The chase was by no means entirely smooth, but Sri Lanka got there in the end.
Now, the visiting team will set their sights on taking the series in the second match. The pace and bounce of Pune, which led to India's undoing, probably won't present themselves again, so Sri Lanka will have their work cut out for them.
The ground has never hosted a T20 before, but India have won two of the three ODIs they have played here, with the other rained out.
The totals in both those matches have been relatively low by the modern-day standard—288 for seven by India batting first against Sri Lanka and 155 all out by England, batting first against India. India chased that total in just 28.1 overs, so there are signs that even if it’s slow, there is something in it for the batting.
After their recent limited-overs success in T20, India will have reason to be just a little bit concerned should they lose this match. However, this merely serves as an appetiser for the World T20 in March, so figuring out which creases need to be ironed out is, arguably, more important than the results. With the weather forecast looking good, we should be in for a cracker.
Key players
India
Despite getting out for a duck in the first T20, Rohit Sharma was incredibly consistent during the recent T20 series in Australia. He was India's second-highest run-scorer, behind Virat Kohli, with 143 runs at an average of 47.66. India need him to come off at the top of the order so the big hitters have a platform to launch from.
Sri Lanka
Dinesh Chandimal top-scored for Sri Lanka with 35 in the previous outing, and his side will want much more from him on a surface that's likely to assist the batsmen. India are a fierce team that will come back hard after the loss in the opening fixture.
