2 Teenagers Dead, 6 Injured in Mishap at Canada Olympic Park
Two teenagers were killed and six others were injured at Canada Olympic Park on Saturday following an accident on the bobsled/luge track.ย
According to Clara Ho of theย London Free Press, police believe the teenagers sneaked into the park with a bobsled after it was closed and crashed into a gate on the track. ย ย
Staff Sgt. Paul Wyatt explained the situation as police believe it unfolded:ย "It's believed at least eight teenagers, all males, entered the property after hours and used a personal sled or toboggan in an attempt to go down the bobsled track."
The two teenagers who died were twin brothers Jordan and Evan Caldwell. They were identified by their family, which also released a statement, per Ho:
"We were reminded today that life is but a vapour. Life is precious, life is fragile, and we must redeem the time we're given.ย
Our boys Jordan (and) Evan were bright lights to all who knew them. We are grieving their loss but confident in their new home of heaven. Our brief 17 years with them were a gift: filled with much love, laughter, and fond memories.
They leave a huge void and will be sorely missed.
"
Ho reported the accident occurred with the teenagers roughly halfway down the track, where they "crashed into a large gate used to separate the bobsled and luge tracks."
Emergency workers found eight people wounded, with Jordan and Evan Caldwell pronounced dead at the scene.ย EMS spokesman Adam Loria told Ho the six others were taken to hospitals in the area.ย
Wyatt noted it's unclear if security personnel were working at the park when the teenagersย trespassedย onto theย property and that inquiries are being made to see if any neighbors have security cameras that could help determine what happened.ย
Canada Olympic Park is located in Calgary and was used during the 1988 Winter Olympics for multiple events, including bobsled, luge and ski jumping. It remains in use as a competition, training and recreational facility.ย
