Scotland vs. England: Score and Reaction from 2016 Six Nations Round 1

Tom SunderlandFeb 6, 2016

England booked their first win under new head coach Eddie Jones after defeating Scotland 15-9 at Murrayfield on Saturday to open their 2016 Six Nations account with a win and clinch the Calcutta Cup.

Tries from George Kruis and Jack Nowell paved the way to a bright Six Nations start for England, with Owen Farrell adding five points from the tee after lining up at centre outside fly-half George Ford.

A tense tug of war erupted between the two British foes, with plenty of kicking and mistakes putting a stop to plenty of momentum, but England proved the superior side on the evening, as they claimed the four points on offer.

Despite the victorious result, KICCA's Ian Stafford felt England could have showed more fervour in their first outing under Jones:

There was a sense of mystery surrounding England coming into this fixture, with many wondering what to expect of Jones' side and how it would differ from that of predecessor Stuart Lancaster.

But the turgid nature of Saturday's head-to-head meant it was difficult to get a read of either side. The packs were evenly matched as rucks and mauls became a fierce battleground, while the backs also muted each other in kind.

That was until a piercing foray from England's forwards saw Kruis barge through for the first score of the Jones era. The official RBS Six Nations YouTube account posted footage of the try as the Saracens lock busted his way to the line following a series of rucks:

That would prove to be the only try of the opening 40 minutes, but Scotland scrum-half Greig Laidlaw sent over a pair of penalties that meant Scotland were very much in the game, as they trailed 7-6 at the half-time whistle.

Despite some passages of end-to-end play, there was no clear dominant party between the two sides, and Simon Thomas of Wales Online rightly termed the clash as anyone's for the taking:

A methodical, pragmatic England took to the pitch for the second half, and it paid dividends just 10 minutes after the restart, when Nowell found space in the right-hand corner to increase the visitors' cushion.

England applied pressure on opposing full-back Stuart Hogg, but it was winger Tommy Seymour who finally found himself outnumbered as Exeter Chiefs star Nowell blazed down the right flank to make it 12-6:

Centre Farrell made up for an earlier missed penalty by increasing England's lead to 15-6 entering the match's final quarter, only for Laidlaw to notch his third penalty and take the deficit back down to six points.

Aside from a Finn Russell break that came to little, there wasn't much of a running threat from Scotland in the second half, and it was England who trotted out the final 10 minutes on the front foot to end as 15-9 victors.

France also won their first match of this year's Six Nations tournament after beating Italy 23-21 earlier on Saturday, while Ireland play host to Wales on Sunday looking to start their title defence on the right foot.

After a tough encounter in Edinburgh, England can expect a slightly easier fixture in Week 2 as they prepare to face Italy in Rome, although their display against Les Bleus showed they'll be no pushovers.
