Super Bowl National Anthem 2016: Updated Odds for Lady Gaga's Rendition

Danny WebsterFeb 6, 2016

Lady Gaga is the one. Let the guessing game begin.

The Grammy Award-winning singer has been chosen to sing the national anthem before Super Bowl 50 on Sunday when the Carolina Panthers take on the Denver Broncos.

Betting on the over/under of the national anthem has become a fun tradition for those who enjoy prop bets during the big game. Jack Randall of Odds Shark notes the under has been achieved in six of the last 10 Super Bowls.

It would've been seven had Idina Menzel not held that last note as long as she did, going over at the last second.

Here's all you need to know if you plan on betting on Gaga's performance. Also, here's an interview she did with NFL Network analyst Nate Burleson on Friday:

Lady Gaga Performing the National Anthem

Time: Two minutes, 20 seconds (listed by Bovada, per Odds Shark)

Moneyline as of Feb. 3: Over 5-6, Under 5-6

Inside the Numbers

Based on recent trends, it's understandable to take Gaga on the under in this situation.

According to Randall, six of the last 10 national anthem singers not only went under, but six singers have gone under the two-minute mark in general.

In this instance of Gaga singing the anthem in 2013, she clocked in at 2:15, which would be slightly under the Super Bowl total. The average time in the last 10 years, according to Randall, is 1:57.

If Gaga were to go over, she would be reaching Alicia Keys territory from Super Bowl 47. Keys' 2:35 performance is the longest on betting record in the last 10 years, per Randall, and the second longest is Jennifer Hudson at 2:10.

But Will She Go Over?

Putting the total time at 2:20 seems like a stretch even for someone like Lady Gaga, who has a flair for showcasing her versatile range. Heading into Sunday, the initial thought is she'd stay under.

However, an interesting development occurred Friday.

When comparing recent national anthems to Keys', it's important to remember she also played the piano. That added some extra time to her performance.

Reggie Aqui from ABC7 in San Francisco captured this footage of Gaga practicing at Levi's Stadium:

We have a piano, some added hand gestures and possibly some notes held out longer than usual. The tempo from the piano will dictate how long Gaga goes, but this short clip could carry a lot of weight. Much like Menzel, the timer doesn't end until the last note is sung. If Gaga holds that last note long enough, along with the piano in the background, she'll go over by a couple of seconds.

Initially, it would appear that Lady Gaga would finish well under. After this video, it's going to be close, and the end result may be her going slightly over the 2:20 mark.
