The Dirtiest Plays in Sports Since 2010

Nick DimengoFeb 6, 2016

Over the years, there have been cheap shots and premeditated hits from certain athletes, so it got me thinking about which ones were the dirtiest plays in sports since 2010.

These plays aren't the good things about sports, bringing out bad sportsmanship and straight-up hatred a lot of times, but they're moments that, hopefully, taught everyone a lesson—that it's never a good idea to be a goon.

10. Nicolas Batum's Nut Shot on Juan Carlos Navarro

Here's a little bit of advice for all athletes: When your team is on the brink of defeat, don't do what Nicolas Batum of the French national team did during a game against Spain in the 2012 Olympics.

That's because Batum left Spanish player Juan Carlos Navarro questioning any future of having kids after a nasty hit to the groin in the waning moments.

As bad as the play itself was, Batum's nonchalant and condescending reasoning was just as upsetting, via The Vertical's Adrian Wojnarowski on Twitter:

Well, at least Batum has no regrets. Good grief!

9. Dennis Wideman Runs Over Official

There are a lot of people who can argue that Calgary Flames defenseman Dennis Wideman was just woozy when he ran into linesman Don Henderson because the player had just taken a big hit.

But in video, it really looks as though Wideman lowered his shoulder and targeted Henderson.

Now, who knows what was going on in the Flames player's head, but the NHL reviewed things and hit him with a 20-game suspension, so it found it dirty enough to make an example out of him—even after he apologized and claimed it wasn't intentional.

8. Metta World Peace Pops James Harden with an Elbow

For as long as I live, I'll never understand Metta World Peace.

Sure, he appears to be a good guy off the floor who just has a burning desire to win—at all costs—while playing basketball. But it's as if he doesn't have that filter in his head that reminds him to think before he acts sometimes.

One of those instances came here, when, during a 2012 playoff game, World Peace absolutely leveled James Harden with an elbow to the dome, causing the Lakers forward to get a seven-game suspension.

Let's not forget this was the same dude who erupted to cause the Malice at the Palace in 2004, too.

7. The Softball Catcher Who Threw Her Elbow Out

It's probably a good thing that this happened on the high school level and not in the major leagues; otherwise, man, a brawl would have erupted.

The sad thing about these vicious elbows from the catcher of Texas high school Needville is that she wasn't sent packing for her behavior, with the ump—who had a clear view of the incidents—insisting on not disciplining the girl.

6. Odell Beckham Jr. Spears Josh Norman

He might be the best young receiver in the NFL, but Odell Beckham Jr. isn't immune to making dirty plays—and I'm not talking about the one-handed grabs that are filthy.

In one of the scariest moments of the past couple of NFL seasons, OBJ—who was away from the initial play—sprinted a good 10 yards and delivered a helmet-to-helmet hit to the side of All-Pro cornerback Josh Norman.

After watching the play a bunch of times, it's laughable Beckham wasn't immediately tossed, as it could have caused serious injury.

No matter what the reason was that set the receiver off or how dirty the trash talk between him and Norman was, this type of play should never be in any sport.

5. Ndamukong Suh Does the Stomp

The thing that I don't quite understand about Miami Dolphins defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh is that he just doesn't get it, as he repeatedly does the same things that gets him in trouble with the NFL.

Most of us probably remember his stomp on Thanksgiving Day against the Green Bay Packers—earning him a penalty and early exit to go eat some turkey that day—but don't forget about all of the other times he has done the exact same thing!

Suh is a tremendous talent and can be dominant, but he needs to let that extra aggression in his head go while out on the football field so he doesn't seriously hurt anybody.

4. College Pitcher Forgets He's Playing Baseball and Not Football

It's almost as if you could see the annoyance meter in the pitcher's head just getting higher and higher, with his throwing a ball inside on the batter—with the man at the plate calling time prior to the pitch—and then taking out one of the guy's teammates on the next pitch.

I'll give the pitcher credit for a solid tackle, but, you know, this isn't football, so it's not really a good look.

The hurler, Levi Austin, was ejected for the decision.

3. Andre Deveaux Gets Slash Happy...During Warm-ups

Anytime you see a hockey player use his stick as a weapon, you know that things are a little messed up in his head. When a player does it before the puck's even dropped, it's even more insane.

That's why the slash that Andre Deveaux pulled on opponent Per Helmersson prior to a Swedish hockey game in 2015 was so scary, because it was premeditated without being antagonized by Helmersson.

Apparently, what Deveaux did was caused by a big hit in a previous game that caused him to get a concussion, meaning he made a mental note to go for Helmersson the next time they shared the ice together.

2. Luis Suarez's Has Serious Bite

Much like the aforementioned Ndamukong Suh, the thing that makes Luis Suarez so vicious is that he is a repeat offender, building a reputation for himself as a biter while out on the soccer pitch.

One of Suarez's first instances of biting came in a match in 2013 when the former Liverpool striker gnawed on the arm of Chelsea's Branislav Ivanovic, which resulted in a 10-match ban for the Uruguayan international—an increase in suspended games from a previous incident where he got hit with a seven-match ban for a similar offense while playing for Ajax.

Once referred to as the "Cannibal of Ajax," Suarez then bit again during the 2014 World Cup in a match versus Italy. The dude clearly hasn't learned a thing.

1. High School Football Player Loses All Kinds of Cool

First, it was a softball catcher throwing out her elbow to knock opponents down. Then, it's a football player going nuts and ripping a helmet off and hitting the player upside the head with it, so what's going on in high school sports?

This play was an easy choice for the dirtiest play since 2010, as the victim needed 10 stitches following the incident—which, hopefully, we don't see ever happen again.
