England are something of an unknown quantity heading into their first 2016 RBS Six Nations clash with Scotland at Murrayfield on Saturday.

After a disastrous 2015 Rugby World Cup campaign, it's all change at the top, with new head coach Eddie Jones having replaced Chris Robshaw with Dylan Hartley in the captain's role.

On the other hand, Vern Cotter's Scotland are a more familiar proposition and proved they will be a force to be reckoned with this year following an excellent World Cup campaign.

Scotland have not beaten England since 2008. They claimed a Six Nations draw in 2010 but have since lost six games on the bounce to the Auld Enemy.

However, many will consider the Scots favourites to prevail at Murrayfield on Saturday after their terrific World Cup campaign, when only a suspect refereeing decision denied them a semi-final spot.

Jones certainly believes Scotland are the favourites to win the match, with Saturday being England's first outing since their embarrassing group-stage exit from the World Cup, per BBC Sport: "We've only had six training sessions together so there is an enormous pressure on Scotland to perform and not so much on us. The bookies might have us as favourites but Scotland have to be."

Despite Jones' assertions, there is enormous pressure on England to perform. There will be much focus on Hartley's performance given how controversial his appointment as captain has been in certain quarters.

The Telegraph's Giles Mole questioned the appointment before it was even announced.

The main questions surrounding Hartley are related to his discipline, and it is undeniable that he has crossed the line too often in the past—he missed the World Cup because of suspension—per BBC Sport's Dan Roan:

However, as captain and under a new coach, the 29-year-old hooker has a clean slate, and he could make a real statement of intent if he leads England to victory on Saturday.

The Calcutta Cup is one of the most hotly fought contests in rugby, and Hartley will have to keep his head against the Scots.

But if he can inspire a winning start to the 2016 Six Nations campaign, then the doubters may begin to be silenced.

Jones has included three uncapped players in his first 23-man squad for the Scotland clash, with prop Paul Hill, Harlequins back-row forward Jack Clifford and centre Ollie Devoto all potentially set for debuts, per the Guardian's Robert Kitson.

Meanwhile, Cotter has been dealt a blow, with centres Alex Dunbar and Peter Horne both set to be absent for Saturday, per the Scottish Daily Mail's Rob Robertson:

However, he still has the likes of Matt Scott and Duncan Taylor to call upon, and a squad with plenty of motivation to go out and claim a win.

Not only will the hosts be driven on by the Murrayfield crowd, and the usual inclination to get one over on England, they will also be motivated by the sense of injustice that must be prevalent in the squad after their World Cup exit.

Scotland couldand shouldhave reached the last four of the 2015 tournament, and they will be eager to prove that their World Cup heroics were not merely a flash in the pan.

Scotland lost all five of their Six Nations matches last year and have won just once in their last 12 tournament games.

However, Cotter has engineered much improvement in the Scottish team since taking over in 2014, and the upcoming Six Nations is a real chance for his side to prove how good they are.

Victory against England would be a fantastic start, but it is set to be a huge challenge against a side who are perhaps the biggest mystery in the competition this year.
