Mexico (Venados de Mazatlan) 9, Cuba (Ciego de Avila) 3
Sebastian Valle drove in five runs to lift Mexico to a 9-3 victory on Tuesday.
Valle smacked a one-out double in the second inning with the bases loaded to drive in three and give Mexico an early lead to work with.
ESPN Beisbol shows the 25-year-old's double:
Valle drove in another two in the bottom of the seventh with his second double of the game, a shot to center field as Mexico remains perfect at the Caribbean Series.
Cuba was hitting Mexico pitcher Eddie Gamboa well; however it was held scoreless through the first five innings of its debut in the competition. Mexico added two runs in the third and the fourth, including a solo home run from Cyle Hankerd to go up 5-0.
ESPN Deportes has the replay of Hankerd's shot to the left:
In the sixth inning, though, Cuba finally got to Gamboa, plating three runs. Lourdes Gourriel drove in two of them with two outs, which forced Gamboa out of the game.
Mexico was quick to add a run in the bottom of the inning before tacking on another three in the seventh. Former major leaguer Yuniesky Betancourt drove in a run with a double to make it 7-3 before Valle continued his big day.
Toros de Tijuana shows Valle's second double:
Cuba is treading in dangerous territory here. It has to regroup and pull out a win in its second game on Wednesday, or else its tournament hopes will take a grave turn. Its next test is Puerto Rico, who lost to Venezuela in its opener on Monday.
It's the perfect start for Mexico, though, who is now 2-0 and the early leader of the tournament after Tuesday. A win like this against Cuba will only help its confidence moving forward. Mexico has a day off before taking on Puerto Rico on Friday.
Venezuela (Tigres de Aragua) 8, Dominican Republic (Leones de Escogido) 7
Venezuela came back from deficits of 4-0 and 7-5 to defeat the Dominican Republic 8-7 on Tuesday night in extra innings. Juniel Querecuto's RBI single in the 10th inning won it for the Venezuelans.
ESPN Beisbol shows his game winner:
Down two heading into the eighth inning, Venezuela scratched out one run in each of the final innings to force extras. The tying run, a Dariel Alvarez single, came against 13-year major league veteran Fernando Rodney in the bottom of the ninth.
The Dominican Republic built their lead thanks to the output from the bottom of their order as Junior Lake, Carlos Paulino and Pedro Lopez accounted for six RBI. The seventh, eighth, and ninth hitters along with Moises Sierra who batted sixth, accounted for 10 of the Dominican Republic's 12 hits.
They sparked the Dominican's offense early, helping them score four runs in the top of the second inning as Lake, Paulino and Lopez recorded consecutive hits. Lopez provided the biggest play of the inning, a two-run double.
ESPN Beisbol shows their big second inning:
Venezuela came right back though, scoring one in the bottom of the second and three in the bottom of the third to tie the game at four. Alvarez came up big with a two-out, two run triple to tie the game.
ESPN Beisbol shows how they tied things up:
A Paulino RBI single gave the Dominican Republic the lead again, only to be answered by Venezuela's Felix Perez's run scoring single in the bottom of the fifth.
But the Dominican Republic yet again answered right back in the top of the sixth thanks to Lake, cannoned a solo home run over the left field fence as ESPN Beisbol shows.
A single by Sierra in the top of the seventh put the Dominican Republic up two before Venezuela's comeback to force extra innings.
Venezuela's dramatic win helps them keep pace with Mexico after the tournament's first two days. First place will be decided with Wednesday's first game when the two leaders play each other at 2:30 p.m. ET.
