Strangest Moments from Super Bowl Opening Night
Super Bowl Media Day became Super Bowl Opening Night in 2016. There were a lot of great moments—like the young cancer survivor who interviewed Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning.
These are not those. No, these are the weird, strange, "WTF" moments of the evening.
Don't misunderstand. The event was well executed and plenty entertaining. Still, there is no way to fill an arena with media members, rabid fans and bright athletic personalities and expect everything to remain oddity-free.
Here are 15 head-scratching scenes from the night, starting with Manning's refusal to talk about his retirement plans.
KIDDING.
Golden Gate Bridge Catwalk
Let's be honest here. The player introductions on a faux Golden Gate Bridge catwalk were a little over-the-top, no? Sure, it fit in with the spectacular theme of the night, but come on. A Golden Gate Bridge in San Jose? It wasn't even the right color.
Broncos Fans
To say there were a lot of strangely dressed Broncos fans on hand would be a severe understatement. Behold:
But none even held a candle to this guy. The tweet says it all.
Mr. Undecided
Then again, at least Bronco fans knew who they were rooting for. What is up with this?
Dr. Manhattan
Super Bowl Media Day has long been famous for bizarre questions—valiant attempts at originality on the part of the media, no doubt. Because of this practice, the world now knows the favorite superhero of Broncos linebacker Von Miller. (It's Dr. Manhattan from Watchmen.)
A Young Robert Redford
Another "original" question: Who would play you in a movie about your life?
Who is Coldplay?
Is it weird not to know who Coldplay is? Probably not, but this question posed to Broncos wide receiver Demaryius Thomas made for an awkward moment.
Entertainment Trivia
It's strange to ask Super Bowl QBs to answer trivia questions, but it's even more strange how many entertainment questions Manning got right.
Especially compared to Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton, who was decidedly less interested in pop stars and the Smiths' Oscars boycott.
Superhero Guy
Apparently there was no dress code for media members at Super Bowl Opening Night. Check out the superhero reporter, actually getting time with the big shots.
Also this:
Bodysuit Guy and Skier Dude
At least a superhero costume fell into the realm of sensical, given the occasion. These two? Not so much.
Newton's Lady
Carolina's QB can always be counted upon for a notable sound bite.
Josh Norman's Luchador mask
Presented without commentary.
Miss Universe/Steve Harvey subplot
Miss Universe was at Super Bowl Opening Night, which led to a predictable onslaught of Steve Harvey jokes on social media.
Along with this not-at-all-cheesy remark from ESPN's Steve Levy:
Opening Night at Super Bowl 50 might be as good a place as any to launch a "Fire Jed York" campaign. Surely there were some San Francisco 49ers fans in the house at the SAP Center in San Jose who could relate to the desire for a new team CEO.
Puppets
Super Bowl Opening Night had superhero costumes, Luchador masks and a dancing elf. Are puppets even that surprising at this point?
Kiss from Cam
And the winner of weirdest question of the night goes to the man who asked Newton to kiss his wife. WTF, indeed.
