Bayern Munich vs. Hoffenheim: Score, Reaction from 2016 Bundesliga Match

Christopher SimpsonJan 31, 2016

Bayern Munich maintained their 100 per cent home record in the Bundesliga and restored their eight-point lead atop the table as they beat Hoffenheim at the Allianz Arena on Sunday.

Robert Lewandowski's brace saw him move within one of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's 20 league goals this season.

As expected, the Bavarians dominated from start to finish, though Hoffenheim's Andrej Kramaric had two good chances to pull level with the score at 1-0 but was unable to take either.

The hosts began with a typical attacking lineup, with Kingsley Coman, Arjen Robben, Thomas Muller and Douglas Costa all supporting striker Lewandowski, and they wasted little time in controlling the proceedings, particularly from the right flank.

Robben was the first to have a shot and twice in quick succession made his trademark move, cutting inside onto his left foot before unleashing a shot on goal. But on both occasions, he failed to hit the target.

The Dutchman wrought havoc with Muller down the wing, and the German had the first shot on target after 17 minutes, though Oliver Baumann easily dealt with his effort. Bundesliga expert Clark Whitney highlighted their dominance:

Hoffenheim's fairly impressive defensive record—which had seen them concede fewer goals than all but one team in the bottom half and just two more than Borussia Dortmund—was evident as they held Bayern at bay, but the Bavarians took a deserved lead shortly after the half-hour mark, per the club's official Twitter account:

This time, the attack came from the left as Costa fired in a low ball across goal for Lewandowski to tap in. OptaFranz noted the impressive impact the pair, along with Muller, have had this season:

The hosts eased their pressure after the goal, allowing Hoffenheim a rare foray upfield, but on-loan striker Kramaric could not beat Manuel Neuer from a slightly difficult angle:

Bayern renewed hostilities after the break, though, and Xabi Alonso saw an early shot from distance tipped over the bar before Kim Jin-Su came very close to an own goal as he diverted a cross narrowly wide of Baumann's left-hand post.

Muller and Lewandowski continued to cause problems, and both came close once more, but again the visitors threatened on the break. Kramaric should have equalised, as he showed neat footwork to dummy Joshua Kimmich, but the Croatian dragged his shot agonisingly wide:

Lewandowski volleyed just wide after acrobatically getting on the end of a flowing team move from Bayern but soon had his brace as the hosts punished the visitors' wastefulness.

Philipp Lahm danced his way forward before slipping in the Pole with a lovely through pass, and Lewandowski made no mistake in deftly lifting the ball over the onrushing Baumann. BT Sport's Archie Rhind-Tutt noted his incredible scoring record this season:

Substitute Arturo Vidal almost had an immediate impact as he rattled the post with a vicious strike from long range, and Lewandowski remained in the hunt for a hat-trick. Though they were unable to round out the scoring with a third, they finished the match in supreme comfort with the contest killed off.

The Bavarians have started 2016 in much the same way they ended the previous year and will likely continue to rack up the points in the coming weeks, though fourth-placed Bayer Leverkusen should offer at least slightly more of a challenge in Week 20.

As for Hoffenheim, they've struggled all season to score goals, as evidenced by their total of 18 in 19 games. Kramaric has been drafted in from Leicester City to resolve that situation, but after making just five brief appearances for the Foxes this season, it could take the 24-year-old some time to get up to speed.

Post-Match Reaction

Bayern manager Pep Guardiola was delighted with his team's performance, per the club's official Twitter account:

The Bavarians face Leverkusen at the BayArena on February 6.
