Real Madrid Transfer News: David De Gea Plan Reported Amid Summer Rumours

James DudkoJan 30, 2016

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez reportedly still intends to sign Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea after missing out on the gifted stopper last summer. With his club's transfer ban now suspended, Perez is "determined" to get a deal done during this summer's window.

J.L. Guerrero of Spanish publication AS (h/t Alex Wood of the Daily Star) states Perez "believes he owes De Gea after the Spain star failed to secure his dream move back to his homeland." However, Los Blancos won't make a bid during this month's window.

Instead, Perez will wait to see what happens regarding his club's FIFA-imposed transfer ban. It's a penalty that has currently been suspended by world football's governing body, per a Press Association report, via the Guardian.

Perez is keeping hopes of signing De Gea alive.

The suspension is pending appeal, and it's a situation also faced by neighbours Atletico Madrid. If it's ultimately upheld, the ban will mean Los Merengues cannot "register any players until the summer of 2017," according to the PA report.

Perez will not want to wait that long for De Gea, who is arguably the best goalkeeper in the game today. He certainly won't want to endure another near miss the way Madrid infamously did on the final day of last summer's Spanish transfer window.

Still, despite the calamity in 2015, De Gea is expected to remain receptive to moving back to the Spanish capital. Analysing the claims in AS, Sport Witness believes the stopper still longs to play for Los Blancos: "A new contract at Manchester United isn't suddenly going to have stopped the goalkeeper's longing for home and to be close to his long-term girlfriend."

Of course, the one angle that barely gets a mention is the form of Madrid's current incumbent between the sticks, Keylor Navas. He's been exceptional at times this season, with the Guardian's Sid Lowe dubbing the 29-year-old "astonishing" back in October.

Navas' form has even reportedly brought him to the attention of longtime Madrid nemesis Pep Guardiola. The former Barcelona manager and outgoing Bayern Munich chief is expected to target Navas if he takes over at Premier League outfit Manchester City next season, according to Spanish website Fichajes.net (h/t Metro's Mark Brus).

Madrid may have other priorities in next summer's market, assuming they are allowed to sign players immediately. A skilled holding player for midfield would make sense, as would a top-notch centre-back and another forward.

But if Perez is as determined to sign De Gea as reports suggest, expect the United 'keeper to be his primary focus. Perez famously didn't back off from signing Luis Figo from Barcelona in 2000, and he won't relent in his pursuit of one of Spain's brightest talents.
