Zou Shiming vs. Natan Coutinho: Winner, Scorecard and Reaction

Tim DanielsJan 30, 2016

Zou Shiming (7-1) returned to the win column Saturday with an eighth-round knockout of Natan Santana Coutinho (12-1) at the Shanghai Oriental Sports Center in China. The victory gives him possession of the previously vacant WBO International flyweight title.

The 34-year-old Chinese fan favorite managed to gain control of the bout in the middle rounds despite some attacking flurries from a gamely Coutinho. The loss will slow the rise of the 21-year-old Brazilian, who was hoping to receive a boost from a much-needed marquee victory.

Zou stepped away from the boxing ring for a while to film a reality show with his son. His last fight came back in March when he lost to Amnat Ruenroeng, which marked his first professional loss after six consecutive victories.

The two-time Olympic gold medalist stated leading up to his clash with Coutinho that he remained committed to boxing despite the brief hiatus to star in the television show, as noted by Mathew Scott of the South China Morning Post.

"I've realized there is more to my life than boxing. That's why I have explored the entertainment industry," Zou said. "But that doesn't mean I'm not fully focused when it comes time to box. I am. And I am ready to start planning for another world title shot, starting with my next opponent."

His rock-solid performance backed up those remarks.

Although it amounted to a road fight for Coutinho, he certainly didn't lack confidence. He managed to land a couple of shots on Zou in the early rounds and didn't mind playing the role of villain to get the fans involved, as highlighted by Asian Boxing:

That type of charisma is always helpful when a fighter is trying to begin the long and arduous climb into the boxing mainstream. He's still somebody worth watching in the years ahead to see he can build off his previously strong start, but that progress is at least temporarily slowed by the loss.

Zou survived those early offensive forays by the young Brazilian and then started to wear him down with a steady barrage of heavy shots. The result was no longer in question by the halfway mark, and it was just a matter of whether the former Olympic sensation could get the knockout, and he did.

Lace Up Boxing Talk came away impressed with the outing:

Now the question is where Zou goes from here.

At 34, his emerging entertainment career provides an alternative to boxing, but Top Rank founder Bob Arum still sees a future in the ring. Murray Greig of China Daily passed along comments from the longtime promoter about the situation before Saturday's bout.

"Zou will get back on the horse and then move to another title fight," Arum said. "But he has to get by this fight first. He's monetized boxing in China. He's making a fortune in reality television, but he wants to fight."

He'll need increase the level of competition if he wants to start making a larger impact in the flyweight division, though. BoxRec ranked him 28th in the division before his victory over Coutinho, which likely won't do much to improve that standing.

That said, Arum is clearly happy with the type of revenue Zou's fights generate in China, and the rebound victory gets the veteran's career trending back in the right direction.
