September 25th, 1988 – Florence Griffith Joyner Sets 100m Olympic Record

September 25th, 1988
While Usain Bolt (Jamaica) is trotting around in gold shoes, breaking damn near every modern track record in the book, Florence Griffith Joyner’s 1988 100m record still stands today.
Her time was a remarkable 10.49s and took place in the quarter-finals of the Olympic Trials for the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea.
Although the historic run has always been questioned (e.g., drugs, too much wind, blah blah blah), Carmelita Jeter (USA) recently challenged Flo-Jo’s ‘88 record. This past weekend (September 20, 2009), Jeter ran a 10.64 to place second on the all-time 100m record list.
If you’re anything like me, you didn’t hear about it either because the rest of the media has all of their love and attention devoted to another Jeter, and there’s only so much Jeter to go around.
Impress Your Co-Workers: Griffith-Joyner is mentioned in Sir Mix-a-Lot’s “Baby Got Back” song. “You can have them bimbos, I keep my women like Flo-Jo.” Is it possible to sound any whitter through written work? I think not.
