Winter X Games 2016: Results, Medal Winners, Trick Highlights from Thursday

Danny WebsterJan 28, 2016

Thursday was the first day of the 2016 Winter X Games, and it was another historic day for Tucker Hibbert.

The 31-year-old tied the X Games record with his ninth straight gold medal, finishing the SnoCross event nearly 11 seconds faster than Sweden's Adam Renheim with a time of 16:05.739.

The X Games tweeted after Hibbert's historic victory:

There were only four events Thursday, highlighted by Hibbert's huge evening. Here's a complete rundown of the action:

Hibbert's ninth straight gold medal tied Jamie Bestwick for the longest streak in X Games history, when Bestwick won nine in the BMX Vert competition.

Sports Illustrated's Brion O'Connor spoke with Hibbert before the start of Thursday's action, and the nine-time gold medalist talked about what motivates him to be one of the best in X Games history:

"

I’ve always been motivated by challenging myself, by figuring out ways to be better. When you’re a little kid, and you’re just learning to ride, there’s so much room for improvement, and there are so many things that you learn over a short period of time. I just really loved the challenge of how to be a better snowmobile rider.

"

It was almost a great day for Gus Kenworthy in the men's Ski SuperPipe, but Kevin Rolland edged him out to take the gold.

The 24-year-old Kenworthy made history in October, becoming the first male action sports star to reveal that he's gay. Thursday's silver medal was the first medal he has earned in the Winter X Games. Kenworthy pulled off a 1080 in his first run for the highlight of the night, and the U.S. Olympic Team provided a clip of the perfectly executed move:

"I'm so happy. It's so sick to have all these people here cheering," Kenworthy said, per Jason Blevins of the Denver Post. "Such good energy."

But the Frenchman Rolland recovered after two falls in his first two runs to take the gold with a 93.33 in his final heat. The X Games provided a clip of his coach's reaction after Rolland stormed back to win:

LifeProof shared footage of Rolland taking the top spot of the podium:

Henry Meece and Kris Klug also won the gold again in the Special Olympics Dual Slalom, edging out Danny Davis and Zach Elder by 0.80 seconds. The X Games also tweeted their reaction to winning another gold medal:

For the first day, the Winter X Games provided plenty of excitement. Friday's coverage begins at noon ET on ESPN3 with the women's Snowboard Slopestyle final.
