Copa Del Rey 2016: Thursday's Quarter-Final, Leg 2 Results and Reaction

Christopher SimpsonJan 28, 2016

Valencia and Sevilla progressed to the semi-finals of the 2016 Copa del Rey on Thursday as they overcame Las Palmas and Mirandes, respectively, triumphing in the second of their two-legged quarter-finals.

Los Che entered the delicately poised tie after drawing 1-1 with Las Palmas in the opening leg and scraped to a 1-0 win in a hard-fought contest.

Meanwhile, Sevilla were in a commanding position following a 2-0 win and ran out comfortable 3-0 winners to take the tie 5-0 overall.

Thursday Recap

The first concrete chance in Gran Canaria fell to Valencia as Jose Luis Gaya found Alvaro Negredo with a cross, but the Spaniard lashed his shot narrowly wide. Shortly after, Las Palmas' Willian Jose tested Mat Ryan with a well-struck free-kick, but the 'keeper was equal to his effort.

After 20 minutes, Los Che went ahead in the tie thanks to Rodrigo Moreno, who tapped in Andre Gomes' low cross at the near post. Las Palmas had further chances of their own as they pushed for an equaliser, and David Garcia headed just over when he rose to meet a dangerous free-kick from Momo.

Spanish football writer Andrew Gaffney praised Valencia trio Enzo Perez, Gaya and Gomes but noted the threat Las Palmas would provide in the second half:

Indeed, much of the play after the restart was thrilling and end-to-end, with Rodrigo wasting an excellent chance to double his tally before Momo forced a stunning save from Ryan at the other end immediately after, per Gaffney:

Valencia lacked the decisive pass in the final third necessary to grab a crucial second as they failed to make the most of some good movement up front.

Las Palmas exerted more and more pressure as the match wore on, but despite pinning the visitors back in their own half in the later stages, they were unable to find a late equaliser, with Ryan making another strong save to deny Jonathan Viera, and Aythami Artiles headed a golden chance off-target.

Sevilla put their tie to bed inside nine minutes to all-but end any hopes of a comeback from Mirandes. After Ion Velez brought down Sebastian Cristoforo in the area, Vicente Iborra tucked the ball into the bottom corner. La Liga captured the moment on Twitter:

As Agence France-Presse's Kieran Canning noted, the tie was essentially over already:

Los Nervionenses almost doubled their lead shortly after as Yevhen Konoplyanka and Sergio Escudero teed each other up in quick succession, but neither could direct their efforts on target.

The likes of Abdon Prats and Alex Garcia failed to make the most of limited chances at the other end, before Juan Munoz finished off a lovely team move after 70 minutes. Coke rounded out the scoring in injury time with a header.

After claiming the UEFA Europa League trophy twice in the last two seasons, Unai Emery's side are experienced in claiming success in cup competitions. They'll be hoping to avoid Barcelona in the semi-finals, of course, but they'll fancy their chances of progressing once again to reach the final.
