Jordan Spieth at Singapore Open 2016: Thursday Score and Reaction
World No. 1 Jordan Spieth made an impressive start to the 2016 Singapore Open, as he shot a bogey-free four-under-par round of 67 on Thursday to take a share of third place.
Per the tournament website, the American drew big crowds as he finished his round one shot back from tied leaders Keith Horne and Berry Henson.
An opening birdie—he started on the 10th—got things off to a flying start, and he picked up further shots at 18, four and seven, while not blotting his scorecard once.
Things could have been even better, as Spieth had a number of chances elsewhere at Sentosa Golf Club, but he should be satisfied with an excellent start to the week.
Here is his scorecard from the day's action:
| Par | 4 | 4 | 4 | 4 | 3 | 4 | 4 | 3 | 5 | 35 |
| Score | 3 | 4 | 4 | 4 | 3 | 4 | 4 | 3 | 4 | 33 |
| Overall | -1 | -1 | -1 | -1 | -1 | -1 | -1 | -1 | -2 | -2 |
| Par | 4 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 4 | 4 | 5 | 3 | 4 | 71 |
| Score | 4 | 3 | 4 | 4 | 4 | 4 | 4 | 3 | 4 | 67 |
| Overall | -2 | -2 | -2 | -3 | -3 | -3 | -4 | -4 | -4 | -4 |
The opening birdie came courtesy of a well-holed 12-footer, and with the putter firing early, it looked as though the superlative 22-year-old might go low.
However, by his own admittance, despite some excellent driving, he did not give himself enough opportunities with his approach play, per the Singapore Open's website:
"Given some of the positions I was in off the tee it was a little frustrating. From there I could not quite get it on the right tier of the green or the right distance. My distance control was just off trying to judge the wind, humidity and the heat. We just struggled a bit with that. I didn’t get many looks (at putts for birdie). I didn’t get the ball inside 15 feet. I had plenty of opportunities to (do that).
"
He was rewarded for some excellent long putting, though, as he got up and down on all three of the par fives to make birdie having reached the green in two.
Spieth had his agent, Jay Danzi, as caddie because his regular bag man, Michael Greller, was out through injury. But it did not seem to hamper him too much.
The Golf Channel provided some brief highlights of his round:
Spieth admitted following his fifth-place finish at the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship last week to feeling "mentally and physically beat up," per Sky Sports' Ali Stafford.
He has been on a globe-trotting tour in recent months, playing at tournaments in South Korea, Australia, Shanghai and Hawaii, so it is little surprise that he is tiring somewhat.
However, the two-time major winner looked in fine form Thursday, and although he left some shots out on the course, he is in contention near the top of the leaderboard—a daunting prospect for the rest of the field.
