Magpies Reportedly Step Up Berahino Chase
Monday, Feb. 1
"Newcastle have come back with a third offer for Saido Berahino," reported John Cross of the Mirror.
"Newcastle owner Mike Ashley is prepared to bankroll a sensational move for the West Brom striker after going to £24 million in straight cash," added Cross, who suggests Steve McClaren's side have already had £18 million and £21 million bids turned down by the Baggies.
West Brom Unlikely to Sell Berahino
Monday, Feb. 1
"Senior sources have been saying Berahino will not be leaving the club today," reported Anton Toloui of Sky Sports. "Some may be surprised by that as the striker has only started eight Premier League games this season and hasn't scored a league goal since mid-October."
Spurs Prepare Final Berahino Bid
Sunday, Jan. 31
"Spurs will make one last attempt to land a player they failed to get back in August," reported the Mirror.
"Although a fee—around £22 million—was agreed, the clubs could not settle on how it should be paid, leaving Berahino unhappy and at loggerheads with his West Brom chairman, Jeremy Peace."
Berahino Would Offer Respite for Kane
The north London club was heavily linked with the Englishman back in the summer, reportedly making four separate offers, the final one being worth £22.5 million spread across five years, per Stuart James of the Guardian.
It is unsurprising that Spurs are looking to go back in for Berahino, as they still lack genuine cover or competition up front for Harry Kane.
However, there are questions over whether Berahino has the quality to excel at White Hart Lane, with his 2015-16 campaign having proved a frustrating one, per Sky Sports News HQ:
Spurs are also not the only club pursuing the 22-year-old, with Newcastle United reportedly prepared to spend around £20 million on him, according to Bleacher Report's Dean Jones:
Berahino has shown in flashes he could yet turn into a top-quality goalscorer. He is only a young player, and under the right manager—perhaps Spurs' Mauricio Pochettino—he could excel.
But his attitude is highly questionable, as was seemingly proved by his reaction at not being allowed to join Tottenham in the summer—he initially refused to appear for West Brom again, per the Telegraph's John Percy.
Tottenham could be the club at which the striker flourishes, and it will be interesting to see how he fares if he finally gets a move.
Playing alongside the likes of Kane, Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen, Berahino could yet turn into the deadly striker he has intermittently threatened to become.
