Danny Garcia vs. Robert Guerrero: Live Round-by-Round Results and Highlights

Kevin McRaeJan 23, 2016

Danny Garcia outpointed a game Robert Guerrero to claim the vacant WBC Welterweight Championship on Saturday night at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

All three judges were in agreement, scoring the contest 116-112 for the now two-division champion from Philadelphia.

Garcia (32-0, 18 KO) had his share of difficulties in the early going. He was willing to settle for one potshot at a time, allowing Guerrero (33-4-1, 18 KO) to outwork him by applying smart pressure.

The fight turned at about the midway point.

Garcia’s body assault and withering hooks began to have their effect on Guerrero, who gave a good account for himself after looking faded in his last few contests, and proved the difference in a competitive fight.

In the co-feature, rising welterweight Sammy Vasquez forced Aron Martinez to quit on his stool between Rounds 6 and 7 of a fight largely devoid of the sustained action many fans hoped for when it was announced.

Vasquez (21-0, 15 KO) turned in an impressive performance. He stalked Martinez in every round and proved to be the only fighter willing to engage and make the fight.

Martinez (20-5, 4 KO) looked nothing like the man who gave Guerrero all he could handle in dropping a controversial decision and then upsetting Devon Alexander. He was overly defensive and retired from the fight with a left shoulder injury.

In the opening contest, Dominic Breazeale, a 2012 U.S. Olympian, remained undefeated when Amir Mansour retired in his corner between Rounds 5 and 6 with an apparent broken jaw.

Breazeale (17-0, 15 KO) seemed to be pretty well behind on the scorecards at the time of the stoppage.

He was dropped hard in Round 3 by a right hand but was able weather the storm, hurting Mansour (20-2-1, 16 KO) with a right of his own two rounds later that seemed to cause the injury and shortly end the fight.
