Manchester United Transfer News: 'Japanese Messi' Yoshinori Muto Rumours Emerge
Manchester United are reportedly monitoring Mainz forward Yoshinori Muto, with English sources claiming the Red Devils have already made a transfer offer for the “Japanese Messi.”
The Sunday People's Steve Bates reports United are close to a £12 million deal for the 23-year-old, who moved to Europe last summer and has made a strong impression during his short spell with Mainz.
Kyodo News (h/t BBC Sport) says Chelsea tried to sign Muto before he moved to the Bundesliga after he impressed greatly during the 2015 AFC Asian Cup.

The Japan international has already scored seven goals and added two assists in 16 Bundesliga starts, per WhoScored.com, a strong return for a young player who is still adapting to the European game.
The Japanese media has compared him to Barcelona star Lionel Messi because of his ability to run with the ball at his feet and change direction on a dime, as well as his natural feel for finishing. Here's a look at some of his highlights:
Muto always seems to be moving on the pitch and displays excellent athletic ability to go with a healthy work rate. His defensive contributions are impressive, and his ability to finish chances hasn't diminished since making the move up to the Bundesliga.
United's interest in the player isn't new―the Guardian's Daniel Taylor previously reported the Red Devils were discussing a move for the talented striker back in December.
Bates now claims the club has made a bid, although pundits in Germany have their doubts regarding the report. Alexander Bonengel of Sky Sports flat-out denied a bid has been made:
"#MUFC #muto Rumours appear to be a hoax: No talks between #ManUtd and Mainz about the japanese striker #m05 #ssnhd
— Alexander Bonengel (@Sky_AlexB) January 10, 2016"
Muto is a superb prospect, and there's little doubt United are indeed tracking the Japanese star. But a summer move seems far more likely than a midseason switch. For starters, Muto is only just getting used to playing in Europe, and for the sake of his development, he needs to stay with Mainz for the foreseeable future.
There's no denying United are desperate to add attacking firepower, but manager Louis van Gaal will have his eyes on proven, experienced contributors who can improve his squad immediately.
It makes no sense adding another player with the potential to be great―just look at how Memphis Depay has struggled in his first season at Old Trafford. Even Anthony Martial, who has flashed tremendous potential, has failed to put the ball in the net with any consistency, which is to be expected from a young player.
Muto falls under the same category. While he has been productive during his short time in Europe, there's a big difference between leading Mainz's attack and that of United. The pressure alone could be enough to crush a young, developing player like Muto.
Mainz made the investment in their Japanese star last summer and won't be too eager to sell their ace at this time. Add to that the fact prices tend to go way up in January, and it seems smarter to continue watching the youngster to see how his development continues.
If Muto does live up to his potential, the Red Devils can always lodge a bid in the summer, but for now, a more experienced option to lead the attack should be preferred.
