BDO World Darts Championship Final 2016: Scores and Prize Money Info
Scott Waites thrashed Jeff Smith at the 2016 BDO World Darts Championship Final at Lakeside in Frimley Green, Surrey, on Sunday to claim his second win in the competition.
Waites, the 2013 champion, stunned his opponent in a repeat of his scoreline from three years prior as he raced to a 7-1 victory.
The Englishman not only claimed the prestigious title for the second time—the 12th player to do so in 39 finals—but also £100,000 in prize money, per Jamie Shaw of Darts.tv.
Live Darts captured the moment and Waites' reaction:
Meanwhile, his opponent was left stunned by the result:
Smith actually went 2-1 ahead in the first set, but after that early setback, Waites came back in ruthless fashion, hitting three doubles out of three to win the set and take a 1-0 lead overall.
An impressive 102 checkout helped the 38-year-old double his tally, and despite turning in the same finish in the third set, Smith quickly found himself 3-0 down, per BT Sport:
The Canadian forced a decisive fifth leg in the fourth, but as Live Darts demonstrated, Waites once again produced an outstanding showing to add to his lead:
Freelance journalist Rob Maul felt a sense of deja vu as he noted similarities between Waites' 2013 final win with his performance so far in the match:
The Silencer once again put in a strong showing in the fifth, but some outstanding finishing again saw him fail to get on the board, per Live Darts:
Smith finally drew blood in the sixth, courtesy of an incredible 161 checkout. BT Sport captured the moment, while BDO Darts suggested it could be the start of a comeback:
Maul praised the Canadian but seemed less convinced a fightback would result:
During the ensuing interval, Live Darts shared the key stats of the match so far:
Perhaps because of the timing of the interval, he was unable to maintain his momentum, though, and despite winning the first two legs of the seventh set—making it five legs in a row—he missed three set darts to allow his opponent to come back and move within one set of victory.
Sports writer Elliot Cornish believed Waites was benefiting more from Smith's profligacy than from his own form:
Nevertheless, the Yorkshireman finished strongly as he hit a 156 checkout on the way to taking the Championship 7-1.
