10 Recruits in 2016 Class Who Have Freakish Measurables

Justin FergusonJan 8, 2016

The college football season will officially end in a few days with the national championship game, and then fans will be able to dive right into the final frenzied weeks of the 2016 recruiting cycle.

Every recruit will have to adjust to the new systems and practices of his school once he enrolls. But one thing that will set the elite recruits apart from day one is their measurables—their raw size, speed, strength and overall athleticism.

Here are 10 players who have stood out in this year's recruiting cycle for their freakish measurables. Some tore up national testing at The Opening this past summer, while others have blown away people at weigh-ins for national all-star games.

Of course, these are just 10 of the freakish recruits in this year's class—not necessarily the 10 freakiest. You can find incredible athleticism and size all over the country.

If you know of other 2016 recruits who should get noticed for their top-notch measurements, shout them out in the comments below.

WR Tyrie Cleveland

1 of 10

Hometown: Houston (Westfield)

Overall Ranking: 69 | WR Ranking: 7

Commitment: Houston

One of the best wide receivers in the nation, Tyrie Cleveland will bring tremendous speed to the fast-paced offense of his hometown Houston Cougars.

Last summer at The Opening, Cleveland tied for the second-fastest 40-yard dash of all the elite recruits who tested at Nike's campus. He ran a 4.32 in the preliminaries and put up a 4.36 in the final round of the Nike Football Rating National Championship, where he placed fourth.

What's even more impressive about Cleveland is that he stands nearly 6'3" and still brings elite sprinter speed to the wide receiver and returner positions. In addition to his 40 time, he put up a blistering time of 3.94 seconds in The Opening's agility shuttle test.

WR Devin Duvernay

2 of 10

Hometown: Sachse, Texas (Sachse)

Overall Ranking: 31 | WR Ranking: 2

Commitment: Baylor

What do you get for the offense that seemingly has everything? For Baylor, it's a world-class sprinter—4-star wide receiver Devin Duvernay.

Like Cleveland, Duvernay ran a 4.32 in the 40-yard dash at The Opening. But the nation's No. 2 wide receiver's most incredible measurable comes on the track, where he ran a 10.27 in the 100-meter sprint to win the 2015 state championship in Texas' highest classification.

That 10.27 was the third-fastest time of any high school track athlete in the nation last year. Duvernay puts that speed to great use on the football field, as he posted nearly 4,000 yards of total offense and 47 touchdowns in his last three seasons at Sachse.

DT Rashan Gary

3 of 10

Hometown: Paramus, New Jersey (Paramus Catholic)

Overall Ranking: 1 | DT Ranking: 1

Commitment: Uncommitted

It should come as no surprise that the No. 1 player in the nation has freakish measurables, right? Rashan Gary's physical gifts at the defensive tackle position makes him downright frightening.

Despite standing 6'5" and weighing nearly 300 pounds, Gary has been timed at running the 40-yard dash in less than 4.8 seconds. On his 247Sports page, Gary has as a 10 out of 10 score in explosiveness, first step, hand quickness and athleticism—with the rest of his attributes rated as nines.

Gary hasn't committed to a program yet out of the 30 scholarship offers that have been made to him. But whoever lands this freakish talent is going to have a difference-maker from day one.

QB Jarrett Guarantano

4 of 10

Hometown: Oradell, New Jersey (Bergen Catholic)

Overall Ranking: 71 | Dual-Threat QB Ranking: 1

Commitment: Tennessee

There's always a danger of overvaluing a dual-threat quarterback's athletic gifts compared to his actual ability to, you know, throw the football. But Tennessee commitment Jarrett Guarantano's athleticism is unreal compared to the rest of his fellow passers.

"Jarrett Guarantano posted some impressive testing numbers at The Opening, and he's a freak athlete in general," Bleacher Report National Recruiting Analyst Tyler Donohue said.

Guarantano's numbers at The Opening—including a 4.65 in the 40-yard dash, a 40 power ball toss and a 4.08 in the agility shuttle—were far and away the best of any quarterback at the event. His final SPARQ score was a 120.06, while the next closest passers were at 96 overall.

WR Josh Imatorbhebhe

5 of 10

Hometown: Suwanee, Georgia (North Gwinnett)

Overall Ranking: 141 | WR Ranking: 26

Commitment: USC

As if a name such as Josh Imatorbhebhe was hard enough to ignore, this Georgia 4-star wide receiver made sure no one would forget who he was at The Opening this past summer.

Imatorbhebhe posted an absurd 47.1-inch vertical leap, seemingly floating when he reached the top of his jump. While that wasn't the only incredible number he had in the event—he came in third overall thanks to a strong powerball toss and shuttle run—he became a viral sensation with the leap.

By comparison, former Eastern Michigan cornerback Willie Creear broke the NFL's combine record for a vertical leap with 47 inches this past year, per John Breech of CBS Sports. Expect to see Imatorbhebhe catching some fades in the end zone for USC in the near future.

DE Josh King

6 of 10

Hometown: Darien, Illinois (Hinsdale South)

Overall Ranking: 118 | SDE Ranking: 7

Commitment: Michigan State

One look at Michigan State commitment Josh King, and you know his physical measurables have to be off the charts. Barton Simmons of 247Sports put him first on the "All-Lobby Team" at this week's U.S. Army All-American Bowl for his incredible size.

"Talk about 5-star measurables," Simmons wrote. "This is what the Michigan State commit checked in at: 6'6.5", 245 pounds, 11-inch hands, nearly 36-inch arms. As a guy that has cut weight in the past for wrestling, King is going to pile on good weight instantly at Michigan State."

King's massive frame makes him a perfect fit for Michigan State's physical brand of trench warfare. He'll be hard to miss once he steps on the field in East Lansing.

CB Nigel Knott

7 of 10

Hometown: Madison, Mississippi (Germantown)

Overall Ranking: 54 | CB Ranking: 6

Commitment: Uncommitted

Nigel Knott might not have taken home the Nike Football Rating National Championship at The Opening this past summer, but he left Oregon with the title of the most freakishly athletic 2016 recruit.

Knott posted the fastest 40-yard dash in Oregon that week, running it in a lightning-fast 4.3 seconds in the preliminary rounds. The Mississippi native also scraped the skies with a 46.5-inch vertical leap, second only to Imatorbhebhe. He came in second overall to 2017 prospect Donovan Peoples-Jones in the final round.

The ultra-athletic cornerback is currently uncommitted; 247Sports lists Alabama and Oregon as the leaders for his signature on national signing day next month.

WR DeKaylin Metcalf

8 of 10

Hometown: Oxford, Mississippi (Oxford)

Overall Ranking: 76 | SDE Ranking: 9

Commitment: Ole Miss

Length can be important at the wide receiver position, and few are as long as Ole Miss wide receiver commitment DeKaylin Metcalf, who also landed on Simmons' "All-Lobby Team" for the All-American Bowl.

"Not only was Ole Miss commit Dekaylin Metcalf the tallest receiver in attendance at just under 6'4", he also had the biggest wingspan among all receivers with freakish 35-inch arms," Simmons wrote. "His catch radius will be huge for Ole Miss."

Metcalf, the son of former NFL offensive lineman Terrence Metcalf, has great all-around athleticism to go along with his long frame. He plays three sports at Oxford High School, and he's pledged to stay in his hometown with the Rebels.

DT Ed Oliver

9 of 10

Hometown: Houston (Westfield)

Overall Ranking: 10 | DT Ranking: 4

Commitment: Houston

Like his high school teammate Tyrie Cleveland, Ed Oliver will be able to impact the fast-rising Houston program from day one with his freakish athleticism.

The 6'2", 277-pound Oliver finished 27th in SPARQ score with a 4.86 in the 40-yard dash and a 46.5-inch kneeling powerball toss—the best score of any recruit at the event. While he's undersized compared to the rest of his class, his athleticism makes him a top-10 recruit.

"He showed that textbook quickness, the thing we've seen him use all the time," Bleacher Report's Michael Felder wrote last summer. "The quickness, the hand placement...and he obviously showed how he can get off the ball, get past guards and get to the quarterback."

DT Mike Panasiuk

10 of 10

Hometown: Roselle, Illinois (Lake Park)

Overall Ranking: 334 | DT Ranking: 35

Commitment: Michigan State

Mike Panasiuk isn't a high-profile name in the 2016 class, but his measurements in the bench press at The Opening made him one to watch for the future. He broke the event's all-time record for reps of 185 pounds with a stunning 43.

"When I got that 40th rep, I was thinking, 'There's no way I can let up,'" Panasiuk told Mike Griffith of MLive.com last July. "Then I got to 42, and that last rep was hard, but all the D-linemen around me were screaming in my face, so I had to get it done.'"

Panasiuk will bring that massive strength to Michigan State starting in the 2016 season. Spartans fans should get excited about the potential of him and Josh King lining up on the same freakish defensive line down the road.
