How Twitter Reacted to Everton's League Cup Victory over Manchester City

Ryan BaileyJan 6, 2016

Everton went into Wednesday evening's League Cup semi-final first leg knowing they had failed to beat opponents Manchester City in their last five attempts.

Before kick-off, however, the Toffees must have had a feeling the outcome would go their way, as they were certainly up for the occasion:

Perhaps the home side were buoyed by the presence of former manager David Moyes, who shared some rare insight with those watching on TV:

Who knew, David? An Everton victory could lead to a Merseyside derby in the final, but many fans at home were confused in the opening stages of the match when they heard fans chanting about Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard:

City fans also took the opportunity to express their dislike of former Manchester United star Tom Cleverley:

However, Manchester United fans might not have heard the abuse aimed at their former charge:

As the first half gently drew to a close, Twitter was not overly impressed with the action:

Everton answered the boredom calls by putting the ball in the net twice, only for the linesman's flag to keep the scorelines even. However, just as fans were about to go into half-time dejected, Ramiro Funes Mori converted the Toffees' first official shot on target to make it 1-0:

If Manchester City had consulted Google Translate, they might have marked Funes Mori a little better:

City dominated possession as the second half wore on and finally made a breakthrough with a counter-attacking move completed by Jesus Navas:

Just seconds after Navas put City back in the game—with his left foot, no less!—Romelu Lukaku put his head on a Gareth Barry cross to restore Everton's lead:

Unfortunately, the prolific striker was injured in the process of scoring and had to leave the field:

No sooner had the ball been retrieved from the net than people were speculating on his future:

For now, Lukaku is a Blue, and the game finished 2-1 to Everton, setting up an extremely well-poised second leg in three weeks' time. As it stands, of course, we are heading for a very enticing final:
