BDO World Darts Championship 2016: Scores and Results from Wednesday

Tom SunderlandJan 6, 2016

The 2016 edition of the BDO World Darts Championship boomed into action on Wednesday as top seed Glen Durrant soared through to the quarter-finals alongside Wesley Harms following wins over Larry Butler and Jim Williams, respectively.

Williams wasn't the only Welshman to exit the contest, either, as Martin Phillips suffered a surprise defeat to Dennis Harbour, who was joined in the last eight by English countryman Jamie Hughes.

Canadian Jeff Smith is the only non-European left in the running after defeating Brian Dawson 4-1 in Wednesday's late fixture, and he'll line up opposite Harbour in the next round.

Evening Recap

Wales lost the second of its two remaining representatives on Wednesday evening as No. 10 seed Phillips joined Williams on the outbound list following his defeat to Harbour.

The Harbour Master made his first outing under the BDO banner more than 30 years ago, but he rolled back the years to beat Phillips 4-1. Bet365 highlighted this round-of-16 win as a long time coming for the veteran:

It was by no means an achievement handed to Harbour, either, after he raced into a 3-0 lead at Lakeside before surrendering his first set, but he recovered to finish the job and see seeded Phillips out.

The Englishman hardly has any time to rest on his laurels, though, as in-form contender Smith is next up for Harbour, and he showcased some of his finest darts en route to a 4-1 win over Brian Dawson.

Sports Mole writer Darren Plant even went so far as to hint the Canadian could make a subtle bid for the £100,000 top prize unless he encounters the right player before then:

Second-seeded Martin Adams was Smith's first victim at Lakeside, but the defeat of Dawson suggested he can be a very consistent threat at the top level.

While the man from across the pond impressed, Hughes grunted to a 4-1 victory over Latvia's Madars Razma, although PDC ProTour marker Chris McLaren was hardly impressed by his 83 average:

"Yozza" may well have admitted to Wednesday's outing as a sub-par performance, but Razma was even worse and finished as the only player in the round of 16 to average lower than 80 thus far (79.32).

Hughes' finishing in particular could do with improvement, and he'll hope the midweek matchup was little more than a blip before he takes on Harms in the quarters this Friday.

Afternoon Recap

Durrant ensured Wednesday's schedule got off to an exciting start, although the Lakeside audience might have hoped American underdog Butler would put up more of a fight against last year's semi-finalist.

Duzza is in the hunt to eclipse that career-best finish at the BDO World Darts Championship, and Bet365 illustrated his flowing form after romping to a straight-sets victory:

The Middlesbrough native waltzed through with a 95.49 average against Butler, but a much greater task undoubtedly awaits him in the next round, where he'll face either No. 8 seed Geert de Vos or ninth-seeded Scott Waites.

Harms is another opponent who could be on his fixture list depending on how the quarter-finals shape up, and as the official BDO Darts Twitter account noted, it was a shame Williams had to exit at this stage:

Such was the back-and-forth nature of their clash, as the Dutchman went 1-0 ahead before losing successive throws to trail 2-1 and then 3-2.

Fortunately for Harms, Williams proved equally as profligate at certain checkout opportunities, and the fifth-seed took full advantage by mustering some resolve to win the last two legs in succession and seal his revival.

Meanwhile, Lorraine Winstanley and Rachel Brooks were the final women to get their tournament underway, and PDC star Ricky Evans was glad to see the former in action:

Winstanley emerged with a 2-0 victory in the best-of-three fixture, defeating her Yorks team-mate Brooks in straight sets, and her reward is a quarter-final meeting with two-time runner-up Deta Hedman.

The wife of PDC player Dean Winstanley is no stranger to the pressure of these competitions considering she made the World Darts Championship semis in 2012, but No. 3 seed Hedman will be a daunting opponent.
