Who Is Currently Pound-for-Pound No. 1 in MMA Right Now?
With last Saturday night's return to the ring of Floyd Mayweather Jr. administering a clear one-sided beat down of Juan Manuel Marquez, it can pretty much be argued that the No. 1 pound-for-pound boxer in the world would either be Mayweather returning to his throne or the more crowd pleasing aggressive pound-for-pound champion Manny Pacquiao, who has been winning over the masses.
But deciding who the No. 1 pound-for-pound boxer in the world is may be a much easier task than figuring out who is the No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter in MMA.
The general consensus would usually bring up the following four names: Anderson Silva, George St. Pierre, Lyoto Machida, and Fedor Emelianenko. Who, in your opinion, should be regarded as the No. 1 pound-for-pound MMA fighter and why?
Fedor "the Last Emperor"/"the Russian Experiment" Emelianenko: 32 (7KO's)-1 Loss-1 NC. This Russian heavyweight judo style champion is highly regarded as the No. 1 heavyweight in all of MMA for the last six years. Many publications list Fedor as the No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter in all of MMA.
He holds the unique distinction of holding five separate major titles including: Rings World Heavyweight, King of Kings Championships, the Pride World Heavyweight, Heavyweight Grand Prix Championships, and the World Alliance of Mixed Martial Arts Heavyweight Championship.
Many people, including myself, view his only loss with an asterix since it was due to a cut stoppage from an illegal blow. Fedor's notable wins include wins over: Arlovski, Nogueria, Sylvia.
George St. Pierre "GSP": 21(8)-2 Losses. This Canadian Tom Cruise of MMA fights with a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, wrestling style and holds the UFC welterweight title. GSP has some of the biggest names of all of MMA on his resume, including big wins over BJ Penn twice and Matt Hughes.
He is also one of the very few MMA fighters to avenge all of his two losses. Just a glimpse at the ripped body of GSP tells even the ignorant fight fan that this fighter is an athletic machine as many critics as well as myself consider him to be the greatest athlete in MMA.
Anderson "the Spider" Silva: 29 (17)-4 losses. This Brazilian middleweight champion's face pops up in everyone's mind whenever the words pound for pound and MMA are together in the same sentence. In his last fight, he won back even his harshest critics by utterly out boxing Forrest Griffin in a brutal KO fashion.
I saw glimpses of the greatest Muhammad Ali that night as Silva just kept his hands down to his side and easily evaded any strikes thrown at him only to counter and knock out Griffin with ease. The whole world would promise to be good boys and girls if we could see the dream match of GSP and Silva or even better Silva and Lyoto Machida.
Anderson is always challenging himself as he has many times reached out to boxer Roy Jones Jr. to set up a cross over match with him. Silva also was nominated with Lyoto Machida for the 2009 ESPY Fighter of the Year Award, which ended up going to boxer Manny Pacquiao.
Lyoto "the Dragon" Machida: 15 (5KO's)-0. Machida is the current UFC light heavyweight champion after destroying previous undefeated champion Rashad Evans via monster knock out in the second round. Lyoto is one of the very few top pound-for-pound MMA fighters to still be undefeated.
In fact, it has been widely reported that he has never even lost a single round ever with notable wins over B.J. Penn, Tito Ortiz, Thiago Silvia, and Rich Franklin. He probably also holds the record for handing over the most MMA greats their first loss.
The fans want to see a Rampage vs Machida match as well as a dream match of Machida and Silva at a catch weight. With all the drama and publicity that boxer Juan Manuel Marquez obtained by drinking his own urine, many MMA fans cried that Machida has been drinking his urine long before Marquez started to drink his.
So who in your eyes is the current No. 1 pound-for-pound MMA fighter right now and why. Which pound-for-pound dream matches are you itching to see finally get made sign sealed and delivered? Which other top pound-for-pound fighters do you see taking over the rankings in the near future and why?
