TaxSlayer Bowl: Terry Godwin's Versatility Gives Georgia Fans Hope in 2016

Barrett SalleeJan 2, 2016

The Georgia offense struggled for the majority of the year thanks to an unstable quarterback situation, the injury to stud running back Nick Chubb and an inconsistent offensive line.

There were a few bright spots who emerged, though, and one of those shined bright on Saturday afternoon in the 24-17 TaxSlayer Bowl win over Penn State.

Wide receiver Terry Godwin closed out his freshman campaign with a sizzling performance at EverBank Field in Jacksonville, catching four passes for 34 yards and a touchdown, throwing a 44-yard touchdown pass to Malcolm Mitchell in the second quarter and returning a kickoff for 27 yards. According to postgame notes emailed by Georgia, it is the first touchdown thrown by a Georgia wide receiver since Michael Greer threw one against Georgia Tech in 1998.

It wasn't your ordinary wide receiver pass.

Yes, Mitchell was wide open. But Godwin—a former high school baseball player—hit him in stride deep downfield for the third-longest pass play of the season for Georgia (Greyson Lambert had 48-yard completions versus Louisiana-Monroe and Tennessee).

Welcome to the future, Bulldog fans. Godwin is it.

He finished the regular season second on the team with 35 catches, had 379 receiving yards and looked like a budding superstar for a team that desperately needs offensive superstars. With Malcolm Mitchell's eligibility exhausted, new head coach Kirby Smart and offensive coordinator Jim Chaney need a weapon to build around.

Godwin is the perfect weapon for the new regime.

The 5'11", 174-pounder from Hogansville, Georgia, proved on Saturday that he has the potential to be the No. 1 receiver for the Bulldogs, and he has the ability to be an all-purpose threat that Chaney and Smart can take advantage of as they transition to a new era.

Make no mistake: It will be a new era.

The failed Greyson Lambert-Brice Ramsey experiment at quarterback in 2015 will likely be replaced by another one in 2016, when 5-star true freshman Jacob Eason takes over the top spot on the depth chart either right out of the gate or as the season progresses.

However Eason slides into the lineup, the staff needs a physical, reliable receiver who can grab the football over top-tier defensive backs, move the chains and be used as a threat on jet sweeps and screens in space.

Godwin has all of that in his repertoire, and Smart is lucky that he signed with the Bulldogs late on National Signing Day last year.

Running back Sony Michel will be back alongside Chubb, who should be at 100 percent. Combine them with Godwin's versatility, and Eason should have plenty of help as he adjusts to the college game on the fly.

What's more, Chaney's calling card when he was the offensive coordinator at Tennessee was to get the ball to the hands of his playmakers in space. Godwin is Georgia's most versatile playmaker, which means Chaney will get creative with him in 2016.

Godwin will be a star, and he showed exactly what he's capable of in his sizzling TaxSlayer Bowl performance on Saturday afternoon.
