West Ham vs. Liverpool: Jurgen Klopp 'Angry' with Reds in Post-Match Reaction

Matt JonesJan 2, 2016

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp admitted he was “angry” with his team’s performance after their 2-0 loss to West Ham United on Saturday.

Goals from Michail Antonio and former Reds man Andy Carroll either side of half-time condemned the Merseyside outfit to defeat. Afterwards, the German did not veil his unhappiness with the performance, per the Liverpool Echo:

"

There was not enough in the decisive moments. We had the ball, possession, but not enough finishes. We had some bad luck in some situations but we are responsible for the result. In a game like this where you see you can be better, you have to be better.

It’s not a day for being disappointed, it’s a day for being angry. You cannot win a football match with 90 per cent, you have to do everything, I don’t like it.

As noted by the club’s official Twitter feed, Klopp was succinct in his summary of the team's display:

Here’s a listen to what the Liverpool manager had to say to BT Sport after the game:

Liverpool came into this clash on the back of successive 1-0 wins over Leicester City and Sunderland, and they were looking to push on towards the top four with another victory. But a defeat leaves the Reds on 30 points, five points back of Tottenham Hotspur, who have a game in hand against Everton on Sunday.

The manager was in a poor mood after the game, with the Reds offering little throughout the contest at the Boleyn Ground.

Some supporters may say they were unlucky to be behind, as Alberto Moreno appeared to be fouled high up the pitch before West Ham broke away to score their opening goal.

But as Jim Boardman of the Daily Mirror reported, Klopp was unhappy with the subsequent defending, encouraging his team to play to the whistle:

To add to Liverpool’s miserable day, Carroll, who famously flopped after a £35 million move to Anfield, doubled the Hammers’ advantage with a second-half header. From that point on, the Reds never looked like getting back into the contest.

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher was glad to see some passion from Klopp, something that was not on show from his players:

Although there have been some signs of progress from this Liverpool team under the German’s guidance, it seems to be dawning on Klopp just how big a job he has to do with this team.

The Reds are capable of turning on the style at times; there are major frailties in this squad that can be ruthlessly exploited by teams with a savvy game plan.

This is the first time after a match we’ve witnessed Klopp angry with the efforts of his players, and with a crucial League Cup semi-final to come in midweek against Stoke City, it’ll be intriguing to see if there’s a reaction from the Reds.

If they serve up a similar performance, they can forget about an early-season trip to Wembley.
