Matt Lubick Named Oregon Offensive Coordinator: Latest Comments and Reaction
Oregon head coach Mark Helfrich announced Friday Matt Lubick will take over as the Ducks' offensive coordinator, filling the void left by Scott Frost, per Ryan Thorburn of the Register-Guard.
Lubick has been with the school since 2013 and served as Oregon's passing game coordinator and wide receivers coach.
Ensuring continuity is important for the Ducks given their unique style. There's no guarantee an outside hire would be able to fully grasp and implement the attack that has made the school so successful since Chip Kelly took over in 2009.
Lubick has also made a strong impression on the Oregon players, with junior wideout Bralon Addison praising his work ethic.
"He's going to put forward his best effort first and you can respect that," said Addison, per Andrew Greif of the Oregonian. "There's coaches out there who expect the best from their people but don't put their best effort forth first, so it's kind of hard to respect that. Coach Lubick is always the first guy there and the last guy to leave."
When Helfrich was promoted from offensive coordinator to head coach in 2013 to replace Kelly, it could've resulted in a bit of regression from the Ducks offense. Instead, Oregon lost two games that season and made the national championship in 2014.
Unlike Frost, Lubick won't have the benefit of Marcus Mariota at quarterback to aid in his transition to offensive coordinator, but the Ducks are never lacking in talented skill players.
Lubick may need a year to fully put his stamp on the offense, but the team should once again be competing for a Pac-12 title in 2016 with him calling the offensive plays.
