Chuck Carlton of the Dallas Morning News passed along ESPN's update on Mixon, indicating he was unlikely to return to the College Football Playoff semifinal.
Clemson's Richard Yeargin collided with Mixon and sent him crashing to the turf at Sun Life Stadium. The young ball-carrier had just three carries for four yards and three catches for 11 yards on the day.
Mixon is only a freshman but has taken on an important role as the primary backup to starter Samaje Perine. ESPN's Joe Schad noted that Perine was also feeling the pain in Thursday's contest:
Despite playing limited snaps, Mixon entered the Orange Bowl with 749 yards rushing and seven touchdowns on the season. He had also logged 25 receptions—fourth on the team—for 345 yards and four more scores.
Mixon's absence put more pressure on dual-threat quarterback Baker Mayfield to establish the run with his legs, but it didn't matter in Oklahoma's 37-17 loss.
Kick returner Alex Ross, who ran for 595 yards a season ago, was next in line to receive backfield carries. Ross logged only two carries for minus-one yard as the Sooners had to throw the ball late amid a blowout.
